Another Jarren Duran fan incident has Red Sox nation behind him despite controversy.
This is the second time in a year – the newest one happened April 14, 2026 at Target Field vs the Twins.
What happened on video:
– Duran grounded out in the 5th inning of Boston’s 6-0 loss
– Jogging back to the dugout on the first-base side, he flipped his middle finger toward a fan
– After the game he said: “Somebody just told me to kill myself. I’m used to it at this point… I shouldn’t react like that, but that kind of stuff is still kind of triggering.
Both the Twins and MLB opened investigations. The Twins said: “We were made aware of the situation late last night and are looking into it. There’s no place in our game for conduct like that.
Why Red Sox Nation is backing him despite the gesture:
1. Context from Netflix doc:* In April 2025 Netflix released “The Clubhouse: A Year With The Red Sox” – episode 4 “Still Alive” focuses on Duran talking about severe depression and a suicide attempt in 2022. He said opening up “also open yourself up to the enemies. But I have a good support staff around me.
*2. This has happened before:* Just weeks after that doc came out, April 27, 2025 in Cleveland, a fan in the front row near the Red Sox dugout was ejected after saying something inappropriate about that attempt. Red Sox broadcaster Will Middlebrooks said the fan told him “he should have killed himself when he had the chance.” The Guardians apologized and identified the fan.
*3. The controversy part:* Duran was suspended for 2 games in 2024 after directing an anti-gay slur at a heckling fan at Fenway, so some people online said he shouldn’t react. But after this Minnesota incident, most Boston fans, teammates, and manager Alex Cora framed it as a mental-health line that was crossed, not just normal heckling.
Duran himself blamed himself after the Minnesota game: “Honestly, it’s my fault for talking about my mental health because I kind of brought in the haters.
