Red Sox Get Major Roman Anthony Return Update Ahead of Yankees Series
The Boston Red Sox could be on the verge of welcoming back one of their most important young players, with Roman Anthony making significant progress in his recovery ahead of a massive four-game series against the New York Yankees.
Anthony has been sidelined since May after suffering a partially torn tendon connected to his right ring finger during an awkward check swing. The injury proved more complicated than initially expected, keeping the 22-year-old out of Boston’s lineup for months and forcing the organization to take a cautious approach with his recovery.

Now, however, there is renewed optimism that Anthony could return to the major leagues as soon as this weekend.
The young outfielder recently advanced to Triple-A Worcester after completing a rehab stint with Double-A Portland. His first Triple-A appearance provided an encouraging sign, as Anthony went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, a walk and three RBIs. His homer reportedly came off the bat at 107 mph, suggesting that his swing is beginning to look close to major-league form again.
Anthony then spoke about the possibility of returning for Boston’s upcoming series against the Yankees. With the Red Sox scheduled to open the four-game set in New York on Friday, the timing has created considerable excitement among fans.
However, interim manager Chad Tracy is not expected to rush the decision.
Following Wednesday’s action, Tracy indicated that the club would evaluate its rehabbing players before determining whether any of them are ready to join the team in New York. Boston has an off day Thursday, giving the coaching and medical staffs additional time to assess how the players responded physically to their latest games.
Anthony’s second Triple-A game was less impressive offensively. He went hitless in four at-bats, recording three groundouts and a strikeout, although he did play all nine innings in left field. Despite that performance, his overall rehab progression remains encouraging.
The potential return is particularly significant because Anthony was expected to play a major role for Boston this season. As a rookie in 2025, he appeared in 71 games and produced a .292/.396/.463 slash line with eight home runs, 18 doubles and an impressive 140 OPS+.
His 2026 season had been much quieter before the injury, with Anthony batting .229 and recording one home run and five RBIs over 30 games. Still, the Red Sox believe his combination of power, plate discipline and athleticism can provide an important boost during their postseason push.
Anthony is not the only injured player approaching a return. Trevor Story and Isiah Kiner-Falefa are also progressing through rehab assignments, giving Boston several potential reinforcements as the regular season enters its most important stretch.
For the Red Sox, the decision now comes down to whether Anthony has done enough to convince the organization that he is ready for major-league competition. His strong showing in his first Triple-A game certainly strengthened his case.
A return against the Yankees would add even more intrigue to an already important series. Anthony wants to be back, and Boston could desperately use his bat, but Tracy and the medical staff will ultimately determine whether Friday is the right time.
For now, Red Sox fans have plenty of reason for optimism: Roman Anthony is healthy enough to play, his rehab is progressing, and a major-league return appears to be getting closer by the day.
