Former Phillies Reliever Yunior Marte Gets New Opportunity With Pirates Organization
The Philadelphia Phillies have established themselves as one of the National League’s top pitching organizations over the past several years, thanks in large part to a strong mix of elite starters, reliable relievers, and organizational depth. While much of the spotlight has been focused on standout pitchers such as Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sánchez, and Jhoan Duran, the club has also relied on numerous bullpen arms to help navigate long seasons and postseason runs.
One of those pitchers was Yunior Marte, a hard-throwing right-hander who spent two seasons with the Phillies. Although his performances often fluctuated from outing to outing, Marte remained a regular contributor out of Philadelphia’s bullpen and played a role during the team’s recent playoff appearances.
Since departing the Phillies organization, Marte’s professional journey has taken him through several teams and leagues. Now, he has landed another opportunity to continue his career, this time with one of Philadelphia’s in-state rivals.
Earlier this month, Marte signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Following the agreement, he was initially assigned to the organization’s Florida Complex League affiliate before later being promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis, according to official transaction records. The move provides the veteran reliever with a fresh chance to work his way back to the major leagues after facing several setbacks over the last year.
Before joining Pittsburgh, Marte briefly spent time in the Cincinnati Reds organization. However, his stint there was short-lived after he struggled in his lone appearance at the major league level. According to reports, he surrendered four runs while recording just one out, a performance that ultimately led to his removal from Cincinnati’s 40-man roster.
After clearing waivers, Marte opted to explore free agency rather than accept an outright assignment. That decision opened the door for another club to take a chance on his potential, and the Pirates quickly stepped in to offer him a new opportunity.
For Pittsburgh, the signing represents a relatively low-risk move. Marte brings valuable major league experience and could provide additional depth for the organization’s pitching staff. If he performs well in Triple-A, he may eventually earn consideration for a role in the Pirates’ bullpen later in the season.
Marte’s latest stop adds another chapter to a baseball career that has already included several organizations and international experience. Prior to returning to affiliated baseball, he spent the 2025 season pitching professionally in Japan, gaining valuable experience overseas before attempting another comeback in North America.
The right-hander has appeared in the major leagues during multiple seasons, beginning with his rookie campaign for the San Francisco Giants in 2022. He made 39 appearances that year before moving on to Philadelphia, where he spent the next two seasons serving primarily as a middle reliever.
During his time with the Phillies, Marte occasionally showcased the powerful arsenal that once made him an intriguing bullpen option. His fastball and raw stuff often hinted at significant potential, but issues with command and consistency prevented him from securing a long-term, high-leverage role.
Now, the Pirates will look to help Marte regain his confidence and rediscover the form that once made him a valuable contributor on a postseason-contending Phillies team. If he can put together strong performances in the minors, another major league opportunity could soon follow.
