Cubs Predicted to Sign Mariners All-Star Randy Arozarena to $97.5 Million Deal
The Chicago Cubs could be preparing for a major change in their outfield, with several key players potentially reaching free agency at the end of the season. One of the most intriguing possibilities would see the Cubs target Seattle Mariners All-Star Randy Arozarena on a lucrative long-term contract.
While Chicago is expected to prioritize starting pitching during the offseason, the club may also need to make significant additions to its outfield. Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki are both expected to enter free agency, while recently acquired outfielder Tyrone Taylor could also become available.
With the possibility of losing multiple established outfielders, the Cubs could be forced to explore the free-agent market for a replacement. According to Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report, one potential solution could be Arozarena, with a prediction that Chicago will sign the Mariners star to a five-year, $97.5 million contract.
Cubs Could Target Arozarena
Arozarena would represent a major addition for Chicago and could potentially step into the role currently occupied by Suzuki. Miller believes the Cubs could make a serious financial commitment to the veteran outfielder after potentially losing both Happ and Suzuki.
The projected five-year, $97.5 million contract would keep Arozarena in Chicago through his age-36 season. While such a deal would carry some risk, the Cubs could view his production, experience and postseason pedigree as reasons to make the investment.
The possibility of Suzuki leaving would undoubtedly disappoint many Cubs supporters. The Japanese outfielder has become a popular figure in Chicago and has continued to provide quality offensive production. Happ is also highly regarded by the fanbase, making the potential departure of either player difficult for the organization and supporters.
Signing Arozarena for nearly $100 million would also make it challenging for the Cubs to retain both players. Chicago could potentially bring one of them back, but committing substantial money to Arozarena would likely limit the team’s flexibility elsewhere.
Arozarena Would Bring Plenty of Experience
Despite the potential downside, adding Arozarena would be an exciting move for the Cubs.
The veteran outfielder is a three-time All-Star and has already established himself as one of the more recognizable offensive players in Major League Baseball. He also earned ALCS MVP honors during his remarkable postseason run with the Tampa Bay Rays.
At 31 years old, Arozarena continues to perform at a high level with Seattle. His numbers during the current campaign demonstrate why teams could be willing to make a significant financial commitment to him.
Through 109 games, Arozarena has produced 113 hits, 73 runs, 24 doubles, one triple, 14 home runs and 49 RBIs. He has also recorded 20 stolen bases while drawing 45 walks.
His .282 batting average and .827 OPS further highlight his ability to contribute consistently at the plate. His combination of power, speed and experience could make him an attractive target for a Cubs team looking to remain competitive.
Potential Risk for Chicago
There would naturally be concerns about giving a five-year contract to a player who would spend much of the deal in his mid-30s. Injuries, declining production and defensive limitations could become factors later in the contract.
However, Arozarena’s current form and proven track record could make the gamble worthwhile.
If the Cubs ultimately pursue the Mariners star, they could be making one of the biggest outfield moves of the offseason. The decision, however, could also mean saying goodbye to one of their current fan favorites.
