Rangers Forced to Adjust Rotation as Nathan Eovaldi Misses Start Against Padres
The Texas Rangers were forced to make a late change to their pitching plans on Saturday after veteran right-hander Nathan Eovaldi was scratched from his scheduled start against the San Diego Padres due to soreness in his left knee.
Eovaldi had originally been set to take the mound for the second game of the three-game series at Globe Life Field in Arlington. However, concerns over his knee prompted the Rangers to take a cautious approach, removing him from the lineup before first pitch. The team has not yet provided a timetable regarding the severity of the issue or whether it could affect his availability moving forward.
To fill the vacancy in the rotation, Texas turned to left-hander MacKenzie Gore, who will make the start on regular rest. Gore’s most recent outing came on Monday against the Minnesota Twins, allowing him enough recovery time to take the ball again without disrupting his routine.
The 27-year-old Gore has experienced an up-and-down campaign this season. Through 15 starts, he owns a 4-6 record with a 4.27 ERA. Despite the inconsistency, he has demonstrated impressive strikeout ability, recording 86 punchouts, which ranks among the top pitchers in the American League. His ability to miss bats has remained one of the strongest aspects of his game throughout the season.
Saturday’s matchup also carries added significance for Gore because he is facing the organization that drafted him. The Padres selected him with the third overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft, making San Diego the franchise where his professional journey began. However, his career numbers against the Padres have not been particularly encouraging. In five previous starts against his former organization, Gore has compiled a 1-3 record and a 7.04 ERA, indicating that San Diego hitters have generally found success against him.
As for Eovaldi, the 36-year-old veteran has been a key piece of the Rangers’ pitching staff this season. Across 14 starts, he has posted a 6-7 record along with a 4.23 ERA. While those numbers may not fully reflect his value, his experience and leadership remain important components of Texas’ rotation. The Rangers will undoubtedly hope the knee soreness proves to be a minor issue and that he can return to the mound soon.
On the other side, the Padres will send right-hander Walker Buehler to the mound. The 31-year-old enters the contest with a 4-3 record and a 4.14 ERA through 14 starts this season. Buehler has shown flashes of the form that once made him one of baseball’s premier starters, and San Diego will be counting on him to deliver another strong performance.
Buehler has faced the Rangers four times in his career, all as a starter. In those appearances, he has posted a 1-2 record with a respectable 3.72 ERA. While the win-loss record may not stand out, his overall performance against Texas suggests he has generally been effective in limiting damage.
With Eovaldi sidelined and Gore stepping into the spotlight, Saturday’s game presents an intriguing pitching matchup as both teams look to gain an edge in the series.
