Kentucky and Mark Pope Set for In-Home Visit With Elite 2027 Prospect Ryan Hampton
The Kentucky Wildcats are beginning to ramp up their recruiting efforts for the Class of 2027, and head coach Mark Pope is now making a major move in pursuit of one of the nation’s top young prospects. According to recruiting reports, Pope is scheduled to conduct an in-home visit Monday with highly regarded forward Ryan Hampton, signaling Kentucky’s growing focus on securing elite talent for future classes.
Kentucky’s attention to the 2027 recruiting cycle comes as the Wildcats continue working through uncertainty in their 2026 class. At the moment, the program has limited commitments from incoming freshmen and remains in pursuit of several top-tier prospects. Unless Kentucky can land five-star phenom Tyran Stokes, widely viewed as the No. 1 overall player in the 2026 recruiting class, the Wildcats’ next recruiting haul may fall short of expectations.
So far, Kentucky’s only freshman commitment for the 2026 class is four-star guard Mason Williams. While Williams is considered a quality addition, he alone is not enough to satisfy the expectations that typically surround Kentucky basketball recruiting. As a result, Pope is expected to rely heavily on returning players and transfer portal additions to round out future rosters if additional high school commitments do not materialize.
That reality makes the 2027 class increasingly important for the Wildcats, and Ryan Hampton has emerged as one of the program’s most significant early targets.
Hampton, a standout from Daytona Beach, Florida, is regarded as one of the premier players in the 2027 recruiting cycle. According to 247Sports, he is currently ranked as the No. 5 overall prospect in the class and carries an impressive 98 overall rating. His combination of size, athleticism, and versatility has made him one of the most sought-after recruits in the country despite still being early in his high school career.
The talented wing currently plays for DME Academy and stands at 6-foot-6, giving him ideal size for the small forward position. His length, scoring ability, and defensive upside have already attracted attention from major programs nationwide, with numerous Power Four schools extending scholarship offers.
Most recently, Nebraska entered the race for Hampton’s recruitment, joining NC State among the schools that have made significant pushes this year. As Hampton’s national profile continues to rise, Kentucky faces increasing competition in what is expected to become one of the most heavily contested recruitments in the country.
Even with the in-home visit scheduled, a commitment from Hampton is not expected anytime soon. The 2027 recruiting class remains in its very early stages, and most elite prospects have yet to make decisions. In fact, among the nation’s top 20 players in the class, only one has committed so far—forward Javon Bardwell, who has pledged to Kansas.
Still, Kentucky’s decision to prioritize Hampton this early underscores how highly the staff values him. Pope appears determined to position the Wildcats strongly in the recruitment before competition intensifies further.
For Mark Pope, landing a player of Hampton’s caliber would represent a major recruiting victory and could help reshape the long-term outlook of the program. After facing pressure to deliver stronger high school recruiting results, securing an elite prospect like Hampton would provide a significant boost to momentum and confidence around the future of Kentucky basketball.
