Kentucky women’s basketball is getting a potentially major boost to its roster, as head coach Kenny Brooks confirmed that transfer forward Ayanna Patterson has returned to full health and is ready to contribute for the Wildcats heading into the upcoming season.
Patterson, a former five-star recruit and one of the most highly regarded players in her recruiting class, arrives in Lexington after transferring from UConn. Though her college career has been slowed significantly by injuries, Kentucky believes the talented forward is finally healthy and prepared to make an impact.

Brooks has assembled what many view as an impressive offseason roster overhaul as he enters his third year leading Kentucky’s program. Despite outside interest from Virginia earlier in the offseason, Brooks chose to remain in Lexington and has doubled down on his vision for building the Wildcats into a contender. His commitment to the program has been reflected in Kentucky’s aggressive approach to roster building.
In addition to welcoming highly regarded freshmen Maddyn Greenway and Savvy Swords while returning standout Clara Strack, Brooks has also strengthened the roster through the transfer portal with several key additions. Patterson may be the most intriguing of the newcomers because of her pedigree and untapped potential.
Coming out of high school, Patterson was widely considered one of the elite prospects in the nation and built a reputation as a dominant, versatile forward with the athleticism and skill set to excel at the highest level. However, injuries repeatedly disrupted her development at UConn, limiting her ability to stay on the floor consistently. Her first collegiate season came during the 2022–23 campaign, but continued health setbacks delayed her ability to establish momentum over the following years.
Now healthy again, Kentucky hopes Patterson can finally show the form that once made her the No. 4-ranked player in the country.
Brooks spoke glowingly about Patterson’s arrival and what she can bring to the program, pointing to both her decorated high school résumé and her experience being part of a championship-caliber environment at UConn. He expressed excitement about seeing her perform at the level that once made her one of the most coveted recruits in the nation.
Standing 6-foot-2, Patterson brings a versatile and athletic presence to Kentucky’s frontcourt. She moves well for her size, attacks downhill effectively, and has the physical tools to thrive around the basket. Her ability to finish near the rim and battle through contact should make her a strong fit in the physical environment of SEC play.
Beyond her raw talent, Patterson also offers intangibles Kentucky values highly. Her toughness, rebounding, defensive energy, and willingness to do the dirty work in the paint could make her an ideal complement alongside the Wildcats’ more perimeter-oriented scorers. With Clara Strack and Kentucky’s talented guards around her, Patterson may not need to carry the offense to become a major contributor.
Additionally, Patterson brings valuable NCAA Tournament experience from her time at UConn—an asset for a Kentucky team looking to take another step toward national relevance.
If she can stay healthy, Patterson has the potential to become one of Kentucky’s most impactful additions of the offseason. For Brooks, this is exactly the type of high-upside transfer gamble worth taking: a former elite recruit with proven talent, major-program experience, and fresh opportunity in a new environment.
Kentucky fans now await the chance to see if Patterson can finally deliver on the immense promise that made her a star prospect—and if she does, the Wildcats’ frontcourt could become one of the most formidable units in the SEC.
