Missouri Tigers running back Ahmad Hardy has been released from a Mississippi hospital after suffering a gunshot wound over the weekend. Authorities confirmed Tuesday that Hardy is now heading back to Columbia just two days after the incident occurred.
The update was first shared by ESPN reporter Pete Thamel, who reported that the 20-year-old still plans to suit up for Missouri during the upcoming college football season. Despite the frightening situation, early signs point toward Hardy making a recovery and continuing his football career.
According to police in Laurel, Mississippi, the shooting happened around 2 a.m. Sunday outside the Kamakazy Biker Club following a rap concert. Investigators said Hardy was riding in a vehicle that was attempting to leave the area when shots were fired. During the incident, Hardy was struck in the leg.
The running back, who is originally from Brookhaven, Mississippi, was among at least two people transported to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg for treatment. Officials stated that Hardy suffered a wound to the upper part of his leg. Details surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, and law enforcement has not yet released additional information about possible suspects or what may have led to the gunfire.
Hardy’s release from the hospital only two days after the shooting is encouraging news for both Missouri fans and the football program. He is expected to return to Columbia as he continues recovering from the injury.
The talented running back is considered one of the most important returning players for Missouri heading into the new season. Hardy made an immediate impact after transferring from Louisiana–Monroe Warhawks, where he previously earned Sun Belt Freshman of the Year honors. His transition to SEC football proved seamless, as he quickly became one of the top offensive players in the conference.
Last season, Hardy delivered a breakout campaign for the Tigers. He rushed for 1,649 yards, the highest total in the SEC, while also scoring 16 touchdowns. His outstanding production helped him earn SEC Newcomer of the Year recognition along with consensus All-American honors. Hardy’s combination of speed, power, and consistency turned him into one of the nation’s most productive running backs.
Missouri now hopes Hardy can make a full recovery well before the start of the 2026 season. The Tigers are scheduled to open their campaign on Sept. 3 with a home matchup against Arkansas–Pine Bluff Golden Lions. With less than four months remaining before kickoff, the program will continue monitoring Hardy’s condition closely.
