The St. Louis Cardinals have made a roster move ahead of their upcoming three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers, promoting hot-hitting infielder Cesar Prieto from Triple-A Memphis in hopes of adding another productive bat to the lineup.
According to reports, Prieto has been recalled after an impressive stretch in the minor leagues, where he was one of Memphis’ most consistent offensive contributors to begin the season. The versatile infielder, who primarily plays second base, earned the promotion after posting a stellar .923 OPS with six home runs in 28 games. His strong production at the plate made a compelling case for another opportunity in the majors as St. Louis looks for offensive depth entering an important divisional matchup.
To make room for Prieto on the active roster, the Cardinals optioned infielder Thomas Saggese back to Triple-A Memphis. Saggese had been with the big league club but will now return to the minors as the organization gives Prieto another chance to prove himself at the highest level.
Prieto, who will turn 27 soon, has had an interesting path to Major League Baseball. Born in Cuba, he began his professional baseball career in the Cuban National Series, where he played for the Elefantes de Cienfuegos. His standout offensive ability there helped him gain recognition internationally and eventually attracted interest from Major League organizations.
That attention led to the Baltimore Orioles signing him as an international free agent in 2022. Prieto spent the next several seasons developing in the minor leagues, building a reputation as a contact-oriented hitter with gap power and defensive versatility. After parts of four minor league seasons, he finally reached the major leagues last year when the Cardinals gave him his first taste of MLB action.
His initial stint in St. Louis, however, was brief and challenging. Prieto appeared in just three games and recorded one hit while striking out five times in six at-bats. The small sample size did not give him much time to settle in, but it was clear the Cardinals believed he needed more seasoning before becoming a regular contributor.
Now, after his red-hot start in Triple-A, Prieto returns to St. Louis with another opportunity to establish himself. His excellent production in Memphis suggests he may be better prepared for the challenge this time around, and the Cardinals appear willing to reward that performance with meaningful big league at-bats.
The promotion also reflects the team’s desire to inject more offense and flexibility into the roster. Prieto’s ability to play multiple infield spots adds value, especially for a Cardinals team looking for reliable contributors beyond its everyday starters.
Given his success in Triple-A, St. Louis has little downside in seeing what Prieto can offer against major league pitching. If his bat translates, he could provide a boost to the bench or potentially earn a larger role moving forward.
As the Cardinals prepare to face the Brewers in a key divisional series, Prieto’s call-up gives fans another player to watch closely. After tearing up Triple-A pitching, the Cuban infielder now gets his latest chance to prove he belongs in the majors—and perhaps carve out a lasting role in St. Louis.
