Two early transfer portal targets once linked to Kentucky have officially made their decisions, taking their names off the market as the Wildcats continue shaping their roster.
One of those prospects is Eric Reibe, a former UConn Huskies men’s basketball center who announced his commitment to USC Trojans men’s basketball. The 7-foot-1 big man, who previously earned McDonald’s All-American honors, had drawn some level of interest from Kentucky after entering the transfer portal. However, that interest never progressed into anything substantial.
Notably, Mark Pope had recruited Reibe heavily during his high school years before he ultimately chose UConn.
During his time with the Huskies, Reibe played a supporting role but still showed flashes of his potential. Coming off the bench, he averaged just under six points and 3.3 rebounds per game while logging fewer than 14 minutes per contest. Though his numbers weren’t eye-popping, his size and skill set made him an intriguing option for programs seeking frontcourt depth. Now heading to USC, Reibe is expected to have a more significant role under head coach Eric Musselman.
For USC, this addition could be an important one as the program looks to turn things around. The Trojans have endured back-to-back disappointing finishes, placing 12th in the Big Ten Conference and missing the NCAA Tournament in each of Musselman’s first two seasons. With pressure building entering his third year, Reibe’s presence could help strengthen the frontcourt rotation and provide a boost as the team aims to climb the standings.
From Kentucky’s perspective, missing out on Reibe is not viewed as a major setback. The Wildcats and the German native appeared to drift in different directions fairly early in the process, with both sides exploring other opportunities. As a result, his commitment elsewhere does not significantly impact Kentucky’s broader transfer portal strategy.
Another player who had briefly been on Kentucky’s radar, Leroy Blyden Jr., also revealed his next destination. The former Toledo Rockets men’s basketball guard announced that he will continue his career with the Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball. Similar to Reibe’s situation, Kentucky showed early interest in Blyden, even holding a virtual meeting with him shortly after he entered the portal. However, the recruitment never gained real momentum.
It appeared that Blyden became more of a contingency option for Kentucky, particularly if the program was unable to secure commitments from other priority backcourt targets like Alex Wilkins or Zoom Diallo. Once those situations developed, Kentucky’s pursuit of Blyden faded.
Blyden, however, is coming off an impressive freshman campaign that showcased his versatility and scoring ability. He averaged over 16 points per game, while also contributing around four rebounds and 4.5 assists per contest. His all-around production made him one of the more appealing young guards in the portal, and Kansas ultimately secured his commitment.
With both Reibe and Blyden now committed elsewhere, Kentucky sees two more potential additions come off the board. Still, neither situation represents a significant loss, as the Wildcats remain focused on assembling a competitive roster. As the program enters a pivotal third season under Coach Pope, the staff continues to evaluate options and pursue players who best fit their long-term vision.
