Lions Should Prioritize Signing Matthew Judon Over Jadeveon Clowney
After the Carolina Panthers released veteran edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney on Thursday, rumors quickly spread about where the three-time Pro Bowler might land next. Many Detroit Lions fans expressed interest in bringing Clowney to Motown to bolster the team’s pass rush.
However, not everyone in the Lions fanbase is convinced he’s the right fit. While there’s general agreement that Detroit needs help pressuring quarterbacks, concerns linger about Clowney’s cost and how well he would mesh with the team’s culture. With the possibility of Za’Darius Smith rejoining the Lions, the urgency to sign Clowney may be overstated.
Even if Smith doesn’t return, Detroit might still have a better alternative: Matthew Judon. Among the top free-agent edge rushers still available, Judon presents a compelling option over Clowney.
Although Clowney performed well last season, his track record of short stays with multiple teams — five in six years — raises red flags. His controversial departure from Cleveland and recent release from Carolina suggest potential compatibility issues. Given how seriously head coach Dan Campbell values locker room chemistry, Clowney’s fit in Detroit is far from guaranteed.
Judon, on the other hand, brings leadership and consistency. While he had a relatively quiet 2024 season following a trade to the Falcons, he still logged 5.5 sacks, nine quarterback hits, and seven tackles for loss. He could also be signed on a more cap-friendly deal than Clowney, making him a smarter investment for Detroit’s defense.
All things considered, the Lions should target Matthew Judon as a better cultural and financial fit than Jadeveon Clowney. Would you like help turning this into a short article or social media post?
