Official: Brian Wright Confirms the Signing of Celtics Forward Sam Hauser in Proposed Trade with Spurs
In a potential move that could reshape the San Antonio Spurs’ offensive strategy, Celtics forward Sam Hauser is reportedly on the verge of being acquired by the Spurs, according to a trade proposal floated by Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey. The deal, if finalized, would bring a much-needed sharpshooting presence to San Antonio’s lineup, especially as the franchise builds around young talent like Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle.
Spurs general manager Brian Wright is said to be fully behind the move, signaling confidence in Hauser’s ability to make an immediate impact. As the team looks to capitalize on recent lottery luck—holding the second overall pick in the upcoming NBA Draft—this trade suggests San Antonio is eager to strengthen its roster with reliable shooters to complement its young core.
Currently, the Spurs are expected to use their No. 2 pick to select Rutgers guard Dylan Harper, a promising All-Star-caliber player. However, while Harper brings talent and playmaking, he doesn’t necessarily address San Antonio’s biggest weakness: three-point shooting and offensive spacing. Outside of veteran Harrison Barnes, who posted an impressive 43.3% shooting percentage from beyond the arc this past season, the Spurs lack consistent perimeter threats.

In the 2024–2025 season, he connected on 41.6% of his three-point attempts, with an even more impressive 43.9% rate after the All-Star break. His value as a floor spacer cannot be overstated—he excels in catch-and-shoot situations and thrives in off-ball movement, making him a perfect fit alongside the versatile Wembanyama and a potential dynamic playmaker like De’Aaron Fox, should the Spurs continue to pursue star talent.
Bleacher Report’s proposed trade would send Hauser to San Antonio in exchange for Julian Champagnie, Malaki Branham, and three second-round draft picks. While Champagnie and Branham have shown promise as developing role players, the Spurs might see more immediate benefit in securing a proven perimeter scorer who can contribute to their spacing and offensive efficiency.
From Boston’s perspective, this trade could be viewed as an opportunity to bring in two young players with upside while acquiring future assets in the form of draft picks. Champagnie has flashed potential as a two-way player, and Branham offers scoring and athleticism off the bench. However, Hauser’s departure would mean the Celtics are parting with one of their top perimeter threats—a player whose shooting often opened up the floor for stars like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
For the Spurs, the addition of Hauser represents more than just another shooter.
