AMAZING: OKC mayor honor Shai Gilgeous-Alexander with ‘Shai Day in Oklahoma

Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt has officially declared a city-wide celebration honoring Thunder superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, proclaiming May 22 as “Shai Day” in recognition of the All-NBA guard’s impact both on and off the court.

The announcement was made during a special ceremony at Scissortail Park, where Mayor Holt praised Gilgeous-Alexander for his commitment to the Oklahoma City Thunder, his leadership in the community, and his role in revitalizing basketball pride across the city.

“Shai is more than just a basketball player,” Mayor Holt said. “He’s a symbol of resilience, excellence, and the bright future of this franchise. His dedication to our community, his sportsmanship, and his talent deserve to be celebrated.”

Gilgeous-Alexander, who just completed another MVP-caliber season, led the Thunder to their best record since the departure of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, securing a top seed in the Western Conference. He averaged over 30 points per game, was named an All-Star starter, and earned a spot on the All-NBA First Team for the second consecutive year.

Beyond his on-court accomplishments, “SGA” has also become known for his philanthropic efforts and community engagement. Whether it’s visiting local schools, supporting youth programs, or helping raise funds for Oklahoma-based charities, Shai has made a conscious effort to build a genuine connection with the city he now calls home.

“I’m incredibly honored and humbled by this,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “Oklahoma City has embraced me and supported me from the start. I play for this city, and I’m grateful to represent it every night.”

The “Shai Day” festivities included youth basketball clinics, live music, fan giveaways, and a tribute video highlighting his journey from Toronto to NBA superstardom in OKC. With his leadership, style, and poise, Shai has become a central figure in the Thunder’s resurgence and a beloved icon across the

Sooner State.
