Highly-Ranked 4-Star Quarterback Schedules Virginia Tech Visit Ahead of Summer Decision
Virginia Tech’s recruiting momentum is building as a top quarterback prospect in the Class of 2026 has set his official visit date. Offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery and head coach Brent Pry will soon welcome one of the nation’s rising quarterback talents to campus, just ahead of a key summer commitment window.
With Memorial Day Weekend approaching, the college football recruiting cycle is entering a pivotal phase. Starting May 31, official visits will kick off across the country, and Virginia Tech is among the programs set to host elite prospects. One of the first visitors to Blacksburg will be Oscar Rios, a four-star quarterback from Downey, California.
Rios, who measures in at 6-foot-3 and 175 pounds, is ranked as the 10th-best quarterback nationally and is the No. 22 overall prospect in California for the 2026 class, according to 247Sports. His trip to Virginia Tech will take place the final weekend of May as he continues evaluating programs ahead of a commitment he hopes to make by the end of June.
Rios originally received an offer from Virginia Tech under former offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen, who has since joined the staff at Ohio State as the Buckeyes’ offensive line coach. Despite the coaching change, new OC Philip Montgomery has kept the Hokies in the running for Rios, making this upcoming visit a crucial one.
The talented signal-caller is considered a dual-threat with excellent mobility and a strong arm. Greg Biggins of 247Sports has praised Rios for his ability to make plays on the move while delivering deep throws with precision—attributes that would be a perfect fit in Virginia Tech’s evolving offense under Montgomery.
Virginia Tech is still seeking its quarterback in the 2026 class. While they’ve already secured a commitment from wide receiver Carnell Warren, adding a high-upside quarterback like Rios would be a major step in solidifying their offensive future.
Rios is being heavily pursued by other programs as well. His offer list includes Oklahoma State, UCLA, Colorado, Arizona, and Kentucky, among others. Virginia Tech is clearly in a competitive race, making this upcoming visit a high-stakes opportunity for the staff to leave a lasting impression.
The Hokies already have several young quarterbacks on the roster, including Pop Watson, Kelden Ryan, and A.J. Brand. They are expected to remain with the program next season unless roster changes occur, such as through the transfer portal. Garrett Rangel, a recent transfer from Oklahoma State, has also joined the QB room.
Still, the addition of a player like Rios could help build a bridge to the future. His skill set and potential would provide strong depth and competition in the quarterback room while giving the staff another dynamic athlete to develop.
Securing a commitment from Rios would mark an important milestone for Montgomery, who is entering his first season as Virginia Tech’s offensive coordinator. A successful visit could elevate the Hokies’ 2026 class and help position the program for long-term offensive success.
With his visit scheduled and a commitment timeline set, all eyes will be on Oscar Rios as Virginia Tech makes its case for being the right home for the talented California quarterback.
