The Indianapolis Colts are wasting no time in setting the tone for the 2025 NFL season. While much of the league is still easing into offseason programs, the Colts have already embraced a hard-nosed, physical identity one driven by a renewed defensive mindset that’s being felt across the locker room.
Under the direction of defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, the Colts are leaning into a more aggressive, playmaking scheme this offseason. Early reports out of Indianapolis suggest that players are flying to the football, communicating with urgency, and committing to a system that prioritizes disruption over reaction. After a 2024 campaign that saw Indianapolis rank near the middle of the pack in most defensive categories, the shift is both necessary and welcomed.
“We’re not waiting until Week 1 to punch people in the mouth,” linebacker Zaire Franklin told reporters. “The attitude is already here. We’re building it in every rep, every meeting, every walkthrough.”
Much of the energy is centered around second-year standout cornerback JuJu Brents, who has emerged as a vocal leader in the secondary. Brents has reportedly taken major strides in his recognition skills and is playing with a level of confidence that’s contagious. On the defensive line, Kwity Paye and DeForest Buckner are anchoring a front that appears determined to collapse pockets early and often.
Perhaps the biggest difference? The Colts are dialing up pressure. Blitz packages are being introduced earlier in camp than in past years, and the coaching staff is encouraging defensive backs to jump routes and take calculated risks a departure from the more conservative approach of recent seasons.
This defensive tone isn’t just tactical. It’s cultural. From the weight room to the film sessions, the Colts are already experiencing a defensive approach that is relentless, accountable, and unified.
If this identity carries over into September, Indianapolis could surprise people not with flashy offensive numbers, but with a defense that dictates games and commands respect.
