Vancouver Canucks Officially Completed The Signing Of Maple Leafs Star Matthew Knies

In a blockbuster move that has sent shockwaves throughout the NHL, the Vancouver Canucks have officially completed the signing of forward Matthew Knies, previously a rising star with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The deal was confirmed early Tuesday morning, marking one of the most significant acquisitions for the Canucks in recent years as they look to solidify their top-six forward group and continue building a playoff contender in the Western Conference.

Knies, 22, was widely viewed as one of the Maple Leafs’ most promising young players, showing poise and scoring touch during his brief tenure in Toronto. Drafted 57th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft, Knies made an immediate impact upon his NHL debut in the 2022–23 postseason, and continued that momentum into his rookie season. In 2023–24, he posted 15 goals and 20 assists for 35 points across 78 games, all while earning praise for his responsible two-way play and physicality.

The terms of the contract were not immediately disclosed by the Canucks, but early reports suggest a long-term deal valued at over \$5 million annually. Vancouver’s front office has made it clear they view Knies as a critical piece of their core moving forward, joining the likes of Elias Pettersson, Quinn Hughes, and Thatcher Demko as foundational talents.

Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin addressed the media shortly after the signing was announced. “Matthew is a young player with tremendous upside. He plays a heavy game, has a scorer’s touch, and competes in all three zones. We’re thrilled to add someone of his caliber to our group as we continue to build a winning culture here in Vancouver.”

For Toronto, the move comes as a surprising turn, especially given Knies’ role in the team’s youth movement. Speculation continues to swirl that the Leafs’ cap constraints and a possible shift in direction under new front-office leadership played a part in letting the Arizona native walk.

Canucks fans, meanwhile, have every reason to be excited. With Knies in the fold, Vancouver adds a rare combination of size, skill, and grit to its forward corpsone that could push them deeper into the postseason picture in the years to come.
