Panthers Re-Sign T.J. Luther, Release Moose Muhammad in Corresponding Move
The Carolina Panthers made a notable roster adjustment this week by bringing back wide receiver T.J. Luther, a 25-year-old prospect who has been working hard to break into the NFL since going undrafted in 2022. The team officially re-signed Luther on Tuesday, less than a month after he was previously waived.
Luther, a former standout at Gardner-Webb University, initially signed with the Panthers as a free agent and had been participating in offseason activities with the team. However, he was waived by Carolina on May 8 as the front office looked to shuffle the bottom of the roster and evaluate different options ahead of training camp. Despite his release, the Panthers clearly saw potential in Luther and chose to bring him back into the fold after only a short time away.
Luther has yet to make his NFL debut in a regular-season game. Since entering the league two years ago, he has been working to prove himself through offseason workouts, training camps, and practice squads. Though he hasn’t had the chance to show his skills on the main stage during a regular-season contest, Luther continues to show the type of perseverance and determination that often earn players long-term roles in the league.
A product of the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs football program, Luther built a solid résumé in college. Known for his speed and agility, he developed into a reliable deep threat at the wide receiver position and earned attention from scouts for his big-play potential. While he didn’t hear his name called during the 2022 NFL Draft, he remained focused on his dream and eventually signed with Carolina as a free agent.
His return to the team suggests that Carolina still sees untapped potential in his game. Whether it’s special teams contributions, practice squad development, or battling for a spot in the wide receiver rotation, Luther will now have another opportunity to show he belongs on the roster.
The Panthers’ decision to re-sign Luther came as part of a corresponding move that saw them waive/injure wide receiver Moose Muhammad. Muhammad, the son of former longtime Panthers wideout Muhsin Muhammad, had recently joined the team but will now part ways—at least temporarily—as he recovers from an injury. The waived/injured designation typically allows a team to release a player who is unable to participate due to health issues, and if he clears waivers, Muhammad could revert to injured reserve.
This move opens up space for Luther to rejoin the team and potentially compete in the upcoming preseason and training camp sessions. With Carolina currently in the early stages of evaluating its wide receiver depth chart, Luther will likely see reps and chances to make an impression on head coach Dave Canales and the new coaching staff.
For a young player like Luther, the journey to securing a full-time NFL role is rarely straightforward. It’s common for fringe roster players to move on and off active rosters, bounce between teams, or spend extended periods on practice squads before getting their big break. Luther’s resilience and the Panthers’ renewed interest suggest he’s doing the right things behind the scenes.
Now back in Charlotte, T.J. Luther will once again set out to prove that he can contribute at the highest level. Whether through his athleticism, work ethic, or special teams value, the 25-year-old will look to take full advantage of this second chance with the Panthers. With the regular season still months away, Luther will have time to prepare, develop chemistry with quarterbacks, and earn his place on the 53-man roster.
The Panthers continue to shape their roster and evaluate talent heading into the 2025 season, and bringing back a motivated player like Luther may pay off as the team looks to build depth and uncover hidden gems.
