A growing number of NBA insiders believe that Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo could be headed for a major offseason move, with trade speculation swirling after the team’s third straight first-round playoff exit. As rumors intensify, three prominent franchises—the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, and San Antonio Spurs—are being linked to the two-time MVP in what could become one of the biggest trades in NBA history.
Should Antetokounmpo formally request a trade, nearly every NBA team would likely pursue him, but some destinations stand out more than others due to their assets and fit. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the San Antonio Spurs are a team to watch. The Spurs recently moved up to the No. 2 pick in the upcoming NBA Draft, giving them significant leverage in trade talks. Coupled with a young core led by Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio has both the draft capital and player assets to pull off a blockbuster deal.
“It’s not out of the question,” said Windhorst. “San Antonio could realistically acquire Giannis and still build a contending team around him. But it depends on what Giannis wants for his future.”
While pairing Antetokounmpo with rising superstar Wembanyama is an enticing possibility, some analysts believe a move to the Eastern Conference is more likely. Windhorst highlighted that Giannis might prefer to remain in the East rather than navigate the tougher Western Conference landscape. Two teams he mentioned as logical destinations are the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks.
“If Giannis has a say, staying in the East could be his move,” Windhorst said. “Boston and New York have the assets to make a deal happen—and still contend after the trade.”
For Boston, adding Antetokounmpo alongside Jayson Tatum could create one of the league’s most formidable duos. Meanwhile, the Knicks could pair him with Jalen Brunson, offering a new path to title contention in New York.
Ultimately, Antetokounmpo is expected to prioritize joining a team where he can continue to compete at the highest level. Whether that means staying in the East with a contender or forming a super team out West remains to be seen. Regardless of where he lands, the next chapter in Giannis’s career could shift the entire NBA landscape.
