Wisconsin Lands Late Addition to 2025 Class with Flip of In-State SDSU Commit
Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell made a late move to strengthen the Badgers’ 2025 recruiting class, flipping a local prospect from South Dakota State. Mason Kelley, a native of Mukwonago, Wisconsin, has changed his commitment and will now join the Badgers as a preferred walk-on.
Despite the conclusion of spring practices, the Badgers weren’t done finalizing their roster for the upcoming season. Kelley, who originally committed to South Dakota State in February, opted to stay closer to home and play for Wisconsin. He becomes a walk-on addition to a class that previously appeared to be set.
Kelley is listed as an “athlete” on recruiting platforms, with experience playing both quarterback and wide receiver at the high school level. His versatility is evident on his Hudl profile, where he showcases highlights from both positions. While he remains unranked by major recruiting services, Wisconsin clearly sees potential in bringing in the in-state talent.
After committing to SDSU earlier this year and participating in camps and visits with the Jackrabbits, Kelley ultimately decided that the chance to suit up for the home-state Badgers was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. He is expected to redshirt during his first year on campus in 2025.
Wisconsin’s 2025 recruiting class now includes 24 players, with 15 of them already enrolled and having taken part in spring practices. Kelley will join the remaining recruits when they arrive this summer as preparations begin for the upcoming season.
The Badgers’ 2025 class is currently ranked 25th nationally by 247Sports. After a disappointing five-win season in 2024, Coach Fickell remains focused on building depth and adding valuable pieces to the roster. While Kelley’s exact role remains to be determined, the coaching staff clearly believes he has something to offer and are excited to bring him into the program.
