Canucks Sign 2023 First-Round Pick Tom Willander to Entry-Level Deal
The Vancouver Canucks have officially added one of their top defensive prospects to the organization. On Wednesday, the team announced that defenseman Tom Willander has signed a standard three-year, entry-level contract.
Willander, 20, was originally selected by Vancouver with the 11th overall pick in the first round of the 2023 NHL Draft. Since being drafted, he has spent time developing his game at the collegiate level and competing internationally, further establishing himself as a potential future impact player for the Canucks.
In the 2024–25 season, Willander played his sophomore year with Boston University in the NCAA. During that campaign, he appeared in 39 games and tallied two goals along with 22 assists, finishing with 24 points. His contributions on both ends of the ice helped BU remain competitive in the Hockey East conference and reinforced his reputation as a reliable two-way defenseman with strong skating ability and hockey sense.
Willander also had the opportunity to represent his home country of Sweden on the international stage at the 2025 IIHF Under-20 World Junior Championship. In that tournament, he added another two goals and five total points over the course of seven games, helping Sweden reach the later rounds and demonstrating his ability to rise to the occasion in high-pressure matchups.
His performances at both the collegiate and international levels showcased the growth in his game since being drafted. Known for his mobility, gap control, and ability to transition the puck effectively, Willander has developed into the kind of modern defenseman that NHL teams highly value. While he may still need time to adapt to the professional game, his skill set and maturity suggest he could push for a roster spot in Vancouver sooner rather than later.
By signing Willander to an entry-level contract, the Canucks have taken a major step in securing the future of their blue line. The deal allows the organization to bring him into their system full-time, whether that means starting the 2025–26 season in the NHL or continuing his development with their AHL affiliate.
Canucks management has been vocal about the importance of building a solid core of young talent, especially on defense, and Willander is seen as a major part of that vision. His progression will be closely monitored as the team continues to develop a roster capable of long-term success.
With the entry-level deal now in place, Willander joins a growing list of promising young players looking to make their mark in Vancouver. If his strong performances continue, it may not be long before he’s wearing the Canucks jersey on NHL ice.
