San Antonio Spurs and Kevin Durant Reportedly Shared Trade Interest
As the 2025 NBA Draft approaches, the San Antonio Spurs hold the No. 2 overall pick, giving them a prime opportunity to either select a top prospect or use the pick as leverage in a major trade. With the goal of building around rising star Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs have already been connected to several high-profile players. Now, it appears that at least one NBA superstar had mutual interest in a potential move to San Antonio.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, who shared the news on The Pat McAfee Show, All-Star forward Kevin Durant and the Spurs had a shared interest in a possible trade before this season’s deadline. While a deal didn’t materialize, this comes at a time when many around the NBA believe Durant may be on the move this offseason.
Durant, who continues to perform at an elite level, averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game while shooting 52.7% from the field and 43% from beyond the arc during the 2024–25 season, according to ESPN.
Although the Phoenix Suns primarily engaged with the Golden State Warriors in trade talks involving Durant back in February, the Spurs also expressed interest. Notably, Durant was reportedly not in favor of returning to Golden State but was open to joining San Antonio.
From a strategic standpoint, Durant could be a more viable acquisition for the Spurs than other rumored targets like Giannis Antetokounmpo. While Antetokounmpo is younger and arguably a better overall player, he would likely require a much steeper price in trade assets. In contrast, acquiring Durant might allow San Antonio to retain its coveted No. 2 draft pick.
Durant is under contract with a $54.7 million cap hit for the 2025–26 season, according to Spotrac. If the Spurs managed to bring him in, they could potentially field a starting lineup featuring Wembanyama, Durant, De’Aaron Fox, and rookie Stephon Castle. The team could then use the No. 2 pick to draft top guard prospect Dylan Harper, who could come off the bench and develop behind Castle and Fox.
Although the Suns are not expected to overhaul their roster this summer, speculation about Durant’s future continues to gain traction. Should Phoenix be willing to trade him within the Western Conference, the Spurs could be a strong suitor—especially given Durant’s apparent openness to playing in San Antonio.
A potential deal for Durant could immediately elevate the Spurs from a rebuilding team to a playoff contender, giving Wembanyama a veteran superstar to learn from and compete alongside.
