The Green Bay Packers have made a roster change by parting ways with wide receiver Jadon Janke on Monday, following his recent signing on May 14. Although NFL offseason activities, such as Organized Team Activities (OTAs), are nearing their conclusion, teams are still actively reshaping their rosters in preparation for the upcoming season. In this instance, the Packers decided to waive Janke with an injury designation, a move that affects their current count of wide receivers on the 90-man roster, which now stands at 12.
Janke’s time with Green Bay was brief. After being added to the roster in mid-May, his tenure with the team was short-lived as the organization opted for a different direction moving forward. This decision highlights the transient nature of NFL rosters during the offseason, where teams are continually evaluating talent and making adjustments based on performance, potential, and injury concerns.
The roster move comes amidst additional activity on the receiver front. Just last week, the Packers bolstered their receiving corps by signing rookie Sam Brown Jr. from the University of Miami. Brown, a promising talent, will be competing to secure a spot on the expanded 53-man roster come the final cuts this summer. These moves indicate that Green Bay is actively seeking to build the most competitive roster possible, making decisions that reflect both immediate needs and long-term planning.
Janke’s journey before his stint with the Packers offers further context to his current situation. The former standout at South Dakota State entered the NFL undrafted after the 2024 NFL Draft. Initially, he signed with the Houston Texans in May 2024. However, his time with the Texans was also short, as he was released during training camp on August 12, 2024. Not long after, he found another opportunity by joining the Miami Dolphins. Unfortunately for him, the transition did not prove to be a breakthrough; he managed to record only one reception for six yards during his single preseason appearance with Miami, leading to his eventual release when the team finalized its 53-man roster.
Despite these setbacks in the NFL, Janke’s collegiate career at South Dakota State remains notable. During his five years with the Jackrabbits, he amassed impressive statistics, recording 170 receptions for 2,800 yards and scoring 29 touchdown catches. In his senior season alone, he posted 57 receptions for 946 yards along with nine touchdowns, a performance that underscored his abilities as one of the most productive receivers in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).
With his release from the Packers, Janke now has the opportunity to seek a new team either this month or ahead of training camp in July. For a player who has demonstrated noteworthy talent at the collegiate level, this could be the chance to find a setting where he can develop further and contribute more significantly on the NFL stage. Meanwhile, Green Bay’s ongoing adjustments to their 90-man roster suggest that additional moves may follow as the team continues to evaluate players and fill roster spots in preparation for the regular season.
