Panthers Release Second-Year Linebacker Amid Roster Changes

CHARLOTTE — The Carolina Panthers made another roster adjustment on Friday, parting ways with second-year outside linebacker Kenny Dyson. The decision comes during the team’s rookie minicamp as several new players begin integrating into the organization.

Dyson, a product of Bryant University, initially joined the Panthers as an undrafted free agent ahead of the 2023 season. Though he didn’t make the final 53-man roster, he was later added to the practice squad and eventually promoted to the active roster before Week 12. He participated in two games during the 2023 campaign, contributing two tackles.

This move follows another recent departure at the position. On Thursday, the Panthers also released veteran edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney. With both linebackers gone, the team is now shifting its focus to younger talent brought in through the draft and free agency.

Two rookie pass rushers, Nic Scourton and Princely Umanmielen, arrived this week for their first minicamp sessions. They now join a restructured outside linebacker room that includes free agent acquisitions D.J. Wonnum—signed last season—and Patrick Jones II, who joined the team this spring.

Head coach Dave Canales spoke about Clowney’s departure during Friday’s media availability, emphasizing both financial considerations and the opportunity to develop the team’s younger players.

“I really appreciate JD,” Canales said. “When you watch the 2024 film, he’s someone who gave everything on the field. We’re grateful for what he brought to the team. But from a cap perspective and a forward-looking strategy, it made sense to move on.”

Canales also explained that the organization is focused on player development and wants to maximize practice reps for their incoming rookies.

“We’re very development-minded,” he continued. “When you bring in two young edge rushers, those reps in practice are critical. We want to make sure they get the volume of work and learning they need to grow.”

With the release of both Dyson and Clowney, it’s clear the Panthers are steering toward a youth-driven approach at the outside linebacker position. The team appears committed to building around its young core and giving its newcomers every opportunity to earn meaningful roles in 2025.
