Breaking: Rangers captain Jacob Trouba Has Made It Clear That He Wants New York Rangers To Re-Sign $42 Million Top Veteran in Free Agency

Rangers Eye Nikolaj Ehlers as Key Free Agent Target

After a disappointing campaign, the New York Rangers are expected to take an aggressive approach this offseason in hopes of reshaping their roster. Following a season that saw them miss the playoffs just a year after securing the Presidents’ Trophy, the team is exploring both trades and high-profile signings.

While speculation continues about the futures of Artemi Panarin, Mika Zibanejad, and Chris Kreider, the Rangers are now being linked to Winnipeg Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers, according to NHL insiders Shayna Goldman and Murat Ates of The Athletic. Ehlers, who recently completed a seven-year contract worth $42 million, is drawing interest as he enters free agency.

The insiders suggest that if the Rangers can clear enough salary cap space, Ehlers could be a seamless fit. “He checks a lot of boxes,” the report notes. “Ehlers is a left-shooting winger who has played on the right side during various stretches of his NHL career, including a standout period in 2019 alongside Mark Scheifele and Mathieu Perreault.”

If Kreider is traded, Ehlers could slot in as a direct replacement. Alternatively, he could play on the right side, allowing Zibanejad to remain at center. Regardless of where he fits, Ehlers would be a valuable addition to a power play that failed to meet expectations during the 2024–25 season.

Ehlers would likely join the team’s top six forwards and provide an additional scoring threat. With the Jets last season, he tallied 24 goals and 39 assists, totaling 63 points in 69 games — numbers that show his consistency and offensive talent.

Despite last season’s struggles, the Rangers have extended the contract of General Manager Chris Drury, showing their belief in his leadership. Drury, who has been with the organization in various roles, reaffirmed his dedication to the team after the extension announcement.

“It’s a great honor to continue serving this organization,” said Drury. “This offseason is critical, and I’m committed to doing everything possible to achieve our goals, both for next year and beyond.”

One of Drury’s first major moves this offseason was the hiring of respected head coach Mike Sullivan. Now, Drury is expected to focus on the NHL Draft and free agency, where the Rangers are likely to be among the most active teams.

As for Ehlers’ potential market value, AFP Analytics projects that the winger could receive a six-year contract worth $48.6 million, carrying an annual average value (AAV) of $8.1 million. However, should Ehlers reach the open market, he might be able to command a longer seven-year deal, especially with multiple teams expected to show interest — which could drive up the bidding.

Over his NHL career, Ehlers has played in 674 games, registering 225 goals and 295 assists for a total of 520 points. If the Rangers land him, he could be a game-changing piece in their quest to return to Stanley Cup contention.
