Sacramento Kings Free Agent Spotlight: Markelle Fultz
With June underway, NBA free agency is fast approaching, set to begin on Monday, June 30 at 3 p.m. PT. The Sacramento Kings are entering a pivotal offseason, especially with new leadership in place. General manager Scott Perry, assistant GM B.J. Armstrong, and head coach Doug Christie were all hired early in the offseason, and now the focus turns to reshaping the roster for the 2025-26 season.
Sacramento is coming off a disappointing 40-42 campaign that ended with a lopsided loss to the Dallas Mavericks in the Play-In Tournament. That defeat not only concluded a rocky season but also signaled the end of Monte McNair’s tenure as general manager. The next day, Perry stepped into the role and will now have key decisions to make regarding the team’s free agents once the NBA Finals end.
One such player is Markelle Fultz. After the midseason trade that sent De’Aaron Fox to San Antonio, the Kings brought in Fultz on a short-term deal to finish the 2024-25 season. The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft has had an injury-plagued and underwhelming career, and his time in Sacramento was no different. Though initially slotted as the backup point guard, Fultz quickly fell out of the rotation. Coach Doug Christie leaned more heavily on DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, and Malik Monk to initiate the offense.
In 21 games with the Kings, Fultz averaged 2.9 points, 1.0 rebound, and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 41% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc (making four of eight total three-point attempts).
Whether Fultz returns to Sacramento remains uncertain. The Kings currently lack a clear-cut floor general, and acquiring a reliable point guard will be a top priority for GM Scott Perry. While Perry will explore both free agency and trade opportunities, Fultz is unlikely to be a primary target.
As the Kings continue to retool, they’ll also prepare for the 2025 NBA Draft on June 25-26. While Sacramento no longer holds a first-round pick—sent to Atlanta as part of the 2022 Kevin Huerter trade—they do own the 42nd overall selection on Day 2.
