Caitlin Clark Sidelined for Fifth Consecutive Game as Indiana Fever Face Atlanta Dream
The Indiana Fever will once again be without their standout rookie Caitlin Clark as they gear up to face the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday. This marks the fifth consecutive game that Clark will miss as she continues her recovery from a left quadriceps strain.
Clark, who has been a key player for Indiana in the early part of the season, was officially ruled out on Monday by head coach Stephanie White. Despite appearing in only four games so far, Clark has made a significant impact, leading the Fever in scoring and assists with averages of 19.0 points and 9.3 assists per game. Her absence has certainly been felt, but the team has managed a 2-2 record during the stretch she has missed.
Coach White provided an update on Clark’s condition, indicating that the team is taking a cautious approach to her return. “She’s been allowed to participate in some portions of practice,” White explained. “Not full sessions yet. We’re being smart and intentional about her comeback. It’s a long season, and our focus is on the bigger picture. We want her to return when she’s fully ready, not rush her back and risk further injury.”
Clark was on the bench during Indiana’s impressive 79-52 road win over the Chicago Sky on Saturday at the United Center. In her absence, guard Kelsey Mitchell stepped up, scoring a team-high 17 points. The Fever used a dominant 27-point third quarter to take control of the game and cruise to a comfortable victory.
Indiana assistant coach Austin Kelly, who served as acting head coach for the night due to White attending to a family matter, praised the team’s all-around performance. “The players executed the game plan for a full 40 minutes,” Kelly said. “Even during moments when we lost momentum, the communication and leadership on the floor were strong. Everyone supported one another and stayed focused. It was a great team win.”
Meanwhile, the Atlanta Dream are coming off a tough loss against the Connecticut Sun, which snapped their four-game winning streak. The Dream dropped an 84-76 decision on Friday, struggling in the closing minutes. After entering the fourth quarter down by just one point, Atlanta managed only three points over the first five minutes of the period and ultimately shot just 4-of-15 from the field in the final frame.
Dream head coach Karl Smesko acknowledged the team’s offensive struggles and credited the Sun for their strong finish. “Connecticut played hard and earned that win,” Smesko said. “We didn’t generate the same quality of shots that we had during our winning streak. Down the stretch, the Sun made the big plays while we fell short.”
Despite the setback, Atlanta still boasts one of the league’s top scorers in Allisha Gray, who leads the team and ranks sixth in the WNBA with 20.1 points per game. She has been a consistent offensive threat all season. Rhyne Howard has also been a key contributor, averaging 17.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.8 steals per game, showcasing her all-around talent.
As the Fever head into Tuesday’s matchup without their star rookie, they’ll look to continue building momentum from their last win. Atlanta, on the other hand, will be eager to bounce back and defend their home court.
The game presents an important early-season test for both teams, with Indiana seeking to stay afloat without Clark and the Dream looking to recapture the rhythm that fueled their recent win streak.
