Kansas City Chiefs fans—and especially quarterback Patrick Mahomes—can breathe a little easier during mandatory minicamp, as one of Mahomes’ key protectors isn’t creating drama like Chris Jones once did.
The Chiefs have had their share of high-profile contract standoffs over the years, most notably with star defensive tackle Chris Jones, who famously skipped all of training camp and part of the preseason during his own negotiations. That tense episode ended with a deal, but not without putting the organization and its fan base through weeks of stress. Fortunately, it appears offensive lineman Trey Smith won’t be following that same route, which is undoubtedly reassuring for Mahomes.
During a recent OTA interview, it was Jones himself who jokingly confirmed that Smith is steering clear of a holdout. “It’s good Trey didn’t do what I did,” Jones quipped. “He’s doing it right. Don’t listen to me—I went about things differently. Trey, you’re in a good spot.”
Since his contract saga, Jones seems to have gained some perspective. His own extension—eventually worth over $150 million across five years—came only after long, drawn-out negotiations and a strained relationship with the team. Smith, however, is choosing a more cooperative path.
Although Smith skipped earlier voluntary workouts, it’s understandable. He’s entering the final year of his rookie contract and is set to earn just over $23 million. Aware of his increasing value as one of the league’s top right guards, Smith is hoping to secure a long-term extension. General manager Brett Veach made it clear after the NFL Draft that locking up Smith is a top organizational goal.
“There’s no question we want Trey to be here long-term,” Veach said. “Once the draft was done, our attention turned to getting our guys signed. It’s no secret that we want Trey under contract for the future.”
Mahomes, who has endured inconsistent offensive line play—particularly at the left tackle spot—can at least count on stability on the right side thanks to Smith. As the Chiefs continue to adjust their offensive line, having a cornerstone like Smith in attendance and committed to the team is a major boost.
With a mid-July deadline approaching for a potential deal, both sides are expected to work quietly toward an agreement. In the meantime, Mahomes can focus on football, knowing his trusted right guard is exactly where he needs him to be.
