Chiefs Could Trade for Versatile Weapon Cordarrelle Patterson Amid Steelers Uncertainty
Cordarrelle Patterson has long been regarded as one of the NFL’s most dynamic Swiss Army knives capable of catching, running, returning kicks, and doing just about anything asked of him on the football field. But in 2025, the 34-year-old finds himself in a diminished role with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and trade rumors are beginning to swirl.
According to David Latham of Last Word on Sports, Patterson appears to be on the outs in Pittsburgh. With limited offensive snaps and the emergence of younger talent in the Steelers’ backfield, the veteran’s future with the team is unclear. Latham suggests that the Kansas City Chiefs could be a logical destination should the Steelers look to move him.
“Seeing as he’s played on six separate teams, it’s a little surprising that Andy Reid never got his hands on Cordarrelle Patterson,” Latham wrote. “Reid is perhaps the best coach in the league when it comes to scheming targets to the running back, but he hasn’t had a player capable of making the most of those opportunities in quite some time.”
It’s a fair point. The Chiefs, despite their offensive prowess, have lacked a true hybrid back who can stretch the field and serve as a multi-phase weapon. While Isiah Pacheco has blossomed into a hard-nosed starter with improved receiving chops, Patterson brings a different flavor especially as a pass-catching threat and a game-changing kick returner.
Though his prime receiving days when he totaled over 450 yards in multiple seasons may be behind him, Patterson still offers value. His experience, football IQ, and versatility could be leveraged perfectly in Reid’s system, particularly on third downs, gadget plays, or special teams.
With the Chiefs always seeking to stay one step ahead of defenses and Mahomes under center, a low-risk move for Patterson could be a savvy play especially with Kansas City eyeing another Super Bowl run.
