Canadiens Could Trade 21-Year-Old Forward Joshua Roy Amid Active Offseason
The Montreal Canadiens have been aggressive early in the offseason, landing key pieces like defenseman Noah Dobson and forward Zachary Bolduc. But their activity may not be finished yet and a promising young forward could be on the move.
According to Canadiens insider Anthony Marcotte, 21-year-old Joshua Roy is being actively shopped by Montreal’s front office. Speaking on BPM Sports, Marcotte revealed that Roy’s future with the Canadiens appears increasingly uncertain.
“I see less and less of a happy future for Joshua Roy in Montreal. And right now, I’m convinced he’s on the market for a deal,” Marcotte said. “If they can get it done in a trade, I’m confident they’ll do it.”
Roy, a fifth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, was once regarded as a potential steal after a standout junior career and a promising entry into the Canadiens’ development system. Hailing from Quebec, Roy had the potential to be a hometown fan favorite, but a crowded forward group and unclear role on the NHL roster have clouded his future with the team.
Currently in the final year of his three-year entry-level contract, Roy appeared in 12 games with the Canadiens this past season, scoring two goals. In total, he’s played 35 NHL games, registering 6 goals and 5 assists for 11 points respectable numbers for a bottom-six winger, but not enough to guarantee a long-term spot on a deepening Montreal roster.
With the Canadiens emerging from a rebuild and eyeing postseason stability, Roy’s development may no longer align with the team’s direction. His combination of speed and physicality makes him a serviceable third- or fourth-line option, and Montreal may look to move him in exchange for a mid-round draft pick or as part of a larger package deal.
As the Canadiens continue to reshape their roster, Roy’s status will be one to watch closely especially with free agency and trade talks heating up across the NHL.
