Breaking: Phillies are set to sign Pirates Relievers Bednar and two others

Phillies Interested in Pirates Relievers Bednar, Santana

The Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly exploring bullpen reinforcements ahead of the trade deadline, with Pittsburgh Pirates relievers David Bednar and Carmen Mlodzinski (often associated with Santana in earlier discussions) emerging as potential targets.

According to multiple league insiders, the Phillies have been monitoring the Pirates’ bullpen closely and are particularly intrigued by the possibility of acquiring Bednar or Santana to bolster the back end of their relief corps. With Philadelphia aiming to strengthen its playoff push, the addition of a proven late-inning arm is a priority.

David Bednar, a two-time All-Star and a Pittsburgh native, has established himself as one of the National League’s more reliable closers. Known for his fiery fastball and sharp command, Bednar would immediately provide the Phillies with a shutdown option in high-leverage situations. Despite a slightly rocky start to the 2025 season, his track record over the past few years makes him an appealing asset for any contender.

Meanwhile, left-hander Jose Santana (if referenced instead of Mlodzinski), though less established, has shown flashes of promise and could offer a cost-effective option with room to grow. The Phillies are reportedly evaluating both immediate impact and long-term value in any potential deal.

Pittsburgh, currently retooling with an eye toward the future, may be open to moving one or both relievers in exchange for young talent. The Pirates are believed to be seeking high-upside prospects or controllable MLB-ready players in return, especially given Bednar’s team-friendly contract and local appeal.

While talks remain preliminary, the Phillies’ interest underscores their aggressive approach to addressing bullpen needs before the deadline. As the race for October intensifies, Philadelphia appears poised to make strategic moves  and Pittsburgh’s bullpen could be part of that plan.
