HABS LATEST: “I Want to Leave” – Canadiens Facing Big Decision With Defenseman Mike Matheson

The Montreal Canadiens are reportedly dealing with internal turmoil as veteran defenseman **Mike Matheson** has allegedly informed the organization of his desire to move on from the team. According to sources close to the situation, Matheson recently expressed frustrations over his role, the team’s direction, and the lack of playoff contention in Montreal, prompting discussions about a possible trade.

Matheson, 30, was one of the Canadiens’ most consistent and productive players during the 2024–25 NHL season. He logged heavy minutes as the team’s top defenseman, contributing both offensively and defensively. With **11 goals and 43 assists for 54 points in 76 games**, he not only led all Habs defensemen in scoring but was also a stabilizing force on the blue line.

However, despite his strong individual performance, the Canadiens once again failed to qualify for the postseason. That lack of progress appears to have taken a toll on the veteran blueliner, who is in the prime of his career and eager to compete for a Stanley Cup.

Matheson’s contract, which carries a **cap hit of \$4.875 million through the 2025–26 season**, is considered a team-friendly deal given his level of play. That makes him a valuable trade asset for general manager Kent Hughes, especially with multiple playoff-contending teams reportedly interested in acquiring a mobile, puck-moving defenseman.

Among the rumored suitors are the **Edmonton Oilers**, **Dallas Stars**, and **Toronto Maple Leafs**, all of whom could benefit from Matheson’s experience and skating ability on their second pairing or power play unit.

The Canadiens now face a difficult decision: keep Matheson and risk dressing an unhappy veteran amid a rebuild, or trade him while his value is high in exchange for young assets or picks. Either path would significantly impact the team’s short-term defense structure and long-term outlook.

As training camp approaches, all eyes will be on Montreal’s front office to see whether they can strike a deal that benefits both Matheson and the Habs’ future.
