BREAKING: Knicks Dealt Another Blow After Losing Out on Another Veteran

The New York Knicks’ turbulent offseason continues to spiral after yet another major setback in their coaching search. This time, it was their pursuit of Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd that hit a dead end, further complicating an already frustrating process for a franchise in dire need of leadership and stability.

According to reports, the Mavericks outright denied the Knicks permission to speak with Kidd, despite strong internal interest from New York’s front office. Kidd, who recently led Dallas to another deep postseason run, remains a key figure in the Mavericks’ long-term plans. The organization is expected to lock him into a lucrative extension, ensuring he remains off the table for any rival team—especially a division threat like the Knicks.

The failed attempt to land Kidd is only the latest in a string of disappointments for the Knicks. Earlier in the offseason, New York was reportedly rebuffed in efforts to interview several other high-profile coaches, including Ime Udoka (Rockets), Chris Finch (Timberwolves), Quin Snyder (Hawks), and Billy Donovan (Bulls). Even assistant coaching targets haven’t panned out, with the Mavericks also blocking New York’s request to speak with Jay Triano, a top candidate for the associate head coach role.

This string of denials has left the Knicks scrambling, with veteran coaches Mike Brown and Taylor Jenkins now emerging as the top remaining candidates. Brown, a former Coach of the Year and seasoned playoff leader, appears to be the frontrunner. Jenkins, meanwhile, brings a modern offensive system and a strong developmental résumé from his time with Memphis.

The dysfunction hasn’t gone unnoticed. Hall of Famer Charles Barkley recently blasted the Knicks organization, calling them the “stupidest damn people in the world” for firing Tom Thibodeau without having a clear, attainable successor in mind. Barkley’s comments reflect the growing skepticism among fans and analysts who feel the franchise continues to operate without a coherent strategy.

As the Knicks regroup and push toward a final decision, pressure is mounting on team president Leon Rose to get this hire right. After years of inconsistency, the franchise can’t afford another misstep. One thing is clear: losing out on Jason Kidd only intensifies the scrutiny surrounding New York’s next move.
