Caitlin Clark, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft and current star for the Indiana Fever, seems to be using her platform to do a bit of recruiting—publicly. Over the weekend of the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game held in Indianapolis, Clark made a comment that has fans and analysts buzzing.
New York Liberty standout guard Sabrina Ionescu, the top pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft, was in town for the All-Star festivities. Not only did Ionescu participate in the game, but she also claimed victory in the Three-Point Contest on Friday. On Sunday, she posted a series of photos from her time in Indianapolis to her Instagram account. One of the photos featured Ionescu sitting in the Indiana Fever locker room right beside Caitlin Clark.
That’s when Clark dropped a playful but telling comment on Ionescu’s post: “looking real natural in that lockerroom.” While short and casual on the surface, the comment had the feel of a recruitment pitch—especially considering Ionescu is set to become an unrestricted free agent following the 2025 season.
At 27 years old, Ionescu has already achieved significant milestones in her WNBA career. She’s been selected as an All-Star four times and won a WNBA championship. Her skills and leadership have made her one of the league’s most respected players. Clark, just 23 and in her rookie season, has openly looked up to Ionescu, viewing her as a mentor and inspiration. The two players share a mutual respect and a close friendship that has only grown since Clark entered the league.
Though both athletes primarily play point guard and are known for their elite three-point shooting and ball-handling, the idea of them teaming up isn’t completely far-fetched. Despite some overlap in their playing styles, they’re both versatile and dynamic enough to form a formidable backcourt. A Clark-Ionescu duo could create one of the most electric guard tandems in the WNBA, blending vision, range, and creativity.
The comment also comes at a time of uncertainty for the league. There are growing concerns over a possible work stoppage that could impact the 2026 WNBA season. However, that hasn’t stopped Clark from planting seeds for what could be a dream partnership in Indiana. Her comment suggests not only admiration for Ionescu, but a hope that they could one day play together—perhaps as soon as next season.
While nothing official has been discussed, and Ionescu still has to finish out her season with the Liberty, the idea of her joining the Fever has certainly caught fans’ attention. Clark’s subtle yet public gesture adds a layer of intrigue to the upcoming free agency period and shows that she’s already thinking about how to build a championship-caliber team.
Only time will tell if Clark’s comment was just friendly banter or the beginning of a serious recruitment. Either way, it’s clear she envisions a future where she and Ionescu could share more than just an All-Star locker room.
