The Indiana Fever faced challenges maintaining a winning record toward the end of June and into early July following an injury to their star rookie guard, Caitlin Clark. Clark, who earned the title of WNBA Rookie of the Year, has been plagued with multiple injuries throughout the season. She has dealt with a series of physical setbacks, including issues with her left quadriceps and left groin, as well as a hand injury suffered during the preseason. These persistent injuries have severely limited her availability.
Out of the team’s 27 total games this season—including the Commissioner’s Cup championship—Clark has only been able to play in 13 of them. Her most recent appearance was on July 15, when the Fever secured an 85-77 victory over the Connecticut Sun. Unfortunately, that game turned out to be her last before being sidelined once again due to a right groin injury.
The Fever initially struggled without Clark, losing two straight games to the New York Liberty immediately after her injury. However, the team has shown resilience in her absence. They bounced back with impressive wins against strong opponents: the defending champion Las Vegas Aces and the Chicago Sky. These victories brought the team back to a record that is two games above the .500 mark, showing they can still compete without their star player.
Despite those recent wins, the team is preparing to move forward without Clark for the foreseeable future. According to ESPN’s Holly Rowe, the latest update suggests that the Fever do not expect her to return to the lineup anytime soon. The organization appears to be prioritizing her long-term health rather than rushing her back into action too quickly.
Clark’s absence is undoubtedly a major blow to the team, considering her impact on both ends of the floor and the attention she draws from fans and opponents alike. Yet, the Fever are showing signs of adapting and finding ways to win despite the adversity. As the regular season continues, Indiana’s ability to stay competitive without their rookie sensation will be a critical storyline to watch.
