Kansas State Quarterback Confirms Return for Final Chapter
Kansas State will retain the leader of its offense for another season, as starting quarterback Avery Johnson announced he is returning to Manhattan to complete his college career. The dual-threat signal-caller made his decision public through a social media post, citing “unfinished business” and a strong belief in the direction of the Wildcats program.
Johnson, who has been the team’s starter for the past two seasons, emphasized his confidence in both his teammates and the coaching staff. In his message, he expressed optimism that the best days for Kansas State are still ahead, reinforcing his commitment to helping the program reach new heights rather than pursuing other opportunities.
The announcement carries additional significance given the recent changes within the Wildcats’ program. Johnson will now play under first-year head coach Collin Klein, a former Kansas State standout quarterback and All-American. Klein originally recruited Johnson to the Wildcats while serving as an assistant coach before spending the last two seasons as offensive coordinator at Texas A&M. Their reunion brings continuity and familiarity at a crucial position as Kansas State transitions into a new era.
A Wichita, Kansas native, Johnson arrived at Kansas State as one of the top recruits in the country, ranked among the top 80 prospects nationally. Known for his athleticism and playmaking ability, he quickly established himself as one of the Big 12’s most dangerous quarterbacks due to his ability to impact games both through the air and on the ground.
Johnson enjoyed a productive 2024 campaign, throwing for 2,712 yards and 25 touchdowns while also rushing for 605 yards and adding seven more scores on the ground. His ability to extend plays and stress defenses made him a focal point of Kansas State’s offense. This past season, however, proved more challenging for both Johnson and the team. The Wildcats struggled to find consistency, finishing with a 6–6 record during a turbulent year that ultimately saw head coach Chris Klieman step down. Kansas State later opted out of bowl participation, closing the season on an uncertain note.
Despite the adversity, Johnson made it clear that his connection to the program runs deep. In his post, he spoke passionately about what Kansas State, its supporters, and the culture of the program mean to him. Rather than viewing the recent season as a setback, Johnson framed his return as an opportunity to finish what he started and help guide the Wildcats back to contention.
At just 21 years old, Johnson has already compiled an impressive body of work. Over his career, he has rushed for 1,378 yards and 22 touchdowns while passing for 5,576 yards and 48 scores. Those numbers place him among the most productive quarterbacks in Kansas State history and highlight his growth since arriving on campus.
With Johnson’s return now official, Kansas State gains stability at the most important position on the field. His leadership, experience, and familiarity with the program are expected to play a key role as the Wildcats navigate a coaching transition and aim to rebound from a disappointing season. For Johnson, the decision is about more than statistics or accolades—it’s about loyalty, belief, and the chance to close his college career on his own terms.
