“When Promises Are Broken, the Love Is Gone”: Phillies Veteran Signals Desire to Leave After Dispute

The Philadelphia Phillies could be heading toward a significant roster change, as speculation continues to grow about the future of third baseman Alec Bohm. With the organization recently committing major money to pitcher Jesús Luzardo, many observers now believe Bohm’s long-term future with the team may be uncertain.

Bohm is entering the final year of his current contract, and throughout the offseason the Phillies’ front office has reportedly been evaluating different options regarding his role with the club. At one point, the team was believed to be exploring the possibility of replacing him with a higher-profile infielder. Two of the names frequently connected to the Phillies during that time were star players Alex Bregman and Bo Bichette.

According to MLB insider Jon Morosi, any move involving Bohm would have required the Phillies to secure a clear upgrade at the position. Morosi explained that trading the third baseman would only make sense if the organization truly believed it had a realistic chance of landing a bigger star such as Bregman, or potentially shifting Bichette into a different infield role. Without that type of upgrade in place, moving Bohm would have created more problems than solutions.

Ultimately, however, the Phillies were unable to land either of those players during free agency. Instead, the organization turned its attention to strengthening another part of the roster. The team made headlines by reaching a massive contract agreement with Luzardo, locking the talented left-handed pitcher into a long-term deal.

Reports from ESPN’s Jeff Passan revealed that the Phillies and Luzardo agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $135 million. The deal ensures the pitcher will remain in Philadelphia through the 2031 season and also includes a club option that could keep him with the team through 2032. By securing Luzardo before he had the chance to reach free agency, the Phillies ensured that one of their key rotation pieces will remain in place for years to come.

While the extension strengthens the team’s pitching staff, it may also indirectly affect Bohm’s future. Financial commitments like this can influence how teams allocate resources, and some analysts now believe the likelihood of the Phillies signing Bohm to a long-term extension has become much smaller.

FanSided writer Christopher Kline noted that although Bohm’s performance dipped slightly last season, he still deserves credit for his production in recent years. In both 2023 and 2024, the third baseman recorded impressive campaigns that included 97 runs batted in. His consistent contact hitting and ability to drive in runs made him a valuable presence in the middle of the Phillies’ lineup.

However, critics have pointed out areas where Bohm could still improve, particularly when it comes to generating more power. Increasing his ability to elevate the ball and hit more home runs would add another dimension to his offensive game.

As things currently stand, the Phillies have several possible paths forward. The organization could choose to let Bohm finish the season in Philadelphia and then allow him to explore free agency next winter. Another possibility is that the team could trade him if the right opportunity arises during the season.

Regardless of which route the club ultimately takes, many around Major League Baseball believe this upcoming season could represent Bohm’s final chapter with the Phillies. For some fans, the idea of change at third base has been building for quite some time, and the recent developments within the organization have only intensified that discussion. ⚾
