The St. Louis Cardinals enter the 2026 Major League Baseball season with a roster that is filled with youth, potential, and several highly regarded prospects. While the team may still need time to turn that potential into consistent wins, many observers believe the organization is building a promising foundation for the future. With several young players already generating excitement, the Cardinals appear to be in a transition period where development and patience will be key.
Among the players drawing attention this spring are promising talents such as JJ Wetherholt, Masyn Winn, and Alec Burleson. Winn and Burleson have already begun to establish themselves at the major league level, giving the team a clearer idea of what they can contribute moving forward. Meanwhile, Wetherholt has impressed enough during spring training to spark talk that he could eventually become the franchise’s next standout star.
However, another player who could play a significant role in the Cardinals’ future is right fielder Jordan Walker. The 23-year-old slugger was once considered one of the most exciting prospects in baseball, and he still possesses the talent that made scouts so optimistic about his long-term potential. Walker made his major league debut in 2023 and produced a respectable rookie season, batting .276 with a .342 on-base percentage and a .445 slugging percentage. During that campaign, he also hit 16 home runs and drove in 51 runs, numbers that showed flashes of his ability to become a powerful offensive contributor.
Since that promising rookie season, however, Walker’s development has been somewhat uneven. Over the last two seasons, he has struggled to maintain consistent production at the plate. Because of those struggles, some analysts have started speculating about Walker’s long-term future in St. Louis. In fact, Bleacher Report writer Joel Reuter recently included Walker on a list of players who could potentially benefit from a “change of scenery” during the 2026 season. The suggestion isn’t necessarily a prediction that a trade will happen, but rather an acknowledgment that sometimes a new environment can help talented players rediscover their form.
Reuter pointed out that Walker’s potential has never been in question. As a 20-year-old playing at Double-A in 2022, Walker hit .306 with a .388 on-base percentage and a .510 slugging mark while collecting 53 extra-base hits in just 119 games. Those numbers highlighted the impressive power and offensive upside that made him the No. 21 overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft.
Publications like Baseball America also recognized his enormous potential, ranking him as the No. 4 overall prospect in baseball entering the 2023 season. Scouts praised his combination of power and solid plate discipline, tools that suggested he could eventually develop into a perennial All-Star caliber player.
Despite the recent struggles, the Cardinals still have every reason to remain patient. Walker is only 23 years old, the same age as Wetherholt, meaning he still has plenty of time to grow and refine his game at the major league level. The 2026 season could be a defining year for him, especially with a new front office evaluating the roster and determining which players will be part of the long-term plan.
If Walker finds his rhythm and delivers the kind of production many expected from him, the idea of trading him will likely disappear quickly. Even if he continues to experience inconsistency, the Cardinals may prefer to give such a talented young player more time rather than moving on too soon.
Ultimately, Walker’s immense upside remains clear, and many believe the organization would be wise to stay patient rather than giving up on a player who still has the potential to become one of the team’s most impactful hitters.
