One potential candidate who has been mentioned as a possible replacement is legendary former slugger Albert Pujols. Pujols, widely regarded as one of the greatest hitters in baseball history, brings an extraordinary résumé to the table. Over the course of his illustrious career, he won three Most Valuable Player awards and captured two World Series titles. Beyond his accomplishments on the field, he has already begun gaining managerial experience, which could make him an appealing option for teams seeking fresh leadership in the dugout.
Elman noted that Pujols has already drawn interest from Major League teams regarding managerial roles. During the previous offseason, he reportedly interviewed with both the Los Angeles Angels and the San Diego Padres for potential managerial openings. Those discussions indicate that his transition into managing at the MLB level may simply be a matter of timing rather than possibility.
Meanwhile, Thomson remains under contract with Philadelphia through the 2027 season and will turn 63 in August. While he has earned respect for his work with the team, age and postseason frustrations could eventually lead the organization to evaluate its long-term leadership plans. One factor working in Pujols’ favor is his growing managerial experience internationally. He currently serves as the manager of the Dominican Republic national baseball team in the World Baseball Classic. Under his leadership, the Dominican squad has performed impressively and advanced to the semifinals, where they are scheduled to face the United States national baseball team. Continued success in that tournament would only strengthen his reputation as a capable leader.
If Pujols were to guide his team to a championship in the global competition, it would likely boost his profile significantly. In that scenario, multiple MLB franchises searching for new leadership could show interest in hiring him.
For the Phillies, the situation ultimately depends on how the team performs in the upcoming season.
