The Philadelphia Phillies made an unexpected roster move on Friday as they continued shaping their squad ahead of the 2026 MLB Opening Day. As the team nears the final stages of deciding its 26-man roster, one notable decision involved left-handed reliever Genesis Cabrera, who was reassigned to minor league camp.
Cabrera, 29, joined the Phillies during the offseason on a minor league contract and earned an invitation to participate in spring training. Throughout camp, he showed strong potential and appeared to be a legitimate candidate to secure a spot in the major league bullpen. However, despite his solid performance, the organization ultimately opted to go in another direction.
The decision comes as a bit of a surprise considering Cabrera’s effectiveness during spring training. With those two already expected to fill left-handed roles, there may not have been enough room to accommodate Cabrera despite his strong showing.
As Opening Day approaches, the Phillies are expected to continue making additional roster moves. Spring training often features a number of players performing at a high level, but difficult decisions must be made since only 26 players can be included on the active roster to begin the regular season.
Even with Cabrera no longer in the immediate picture, Philadelphia’s bullpen remains a strong unit on paper. The team is anchored by standout closer Jhoan Duran, who is widely regarded as one of the top finishers in the league. Setup responsibilities are expected to be handled by dependable arms such as Brad Keller alongside Alvarado, providing depth and experience in late-inning situations.
Additionally, the bullpen includes several other pitchers capable of contributing throughout the season. Names like Orion Kerkering, Banks, and Jonathan Bowlan offer versatility and depth, giving the Phillies multiple options to rely on in different game scenarios.
