A potential blockbuster trade proposal suggests the Texas Rangers could significantly strengthen their bullpen by acquiring All-Star closer Trevor Megill from the Milwaukee Brewers. The suggested deal would send Megill to Texas in exchange for the Rangers’ No. 2 prospect, right-handed pitcher Caden Scarborough.
As the Rangers prepare for the 2026 season, their bullpen situation remains uncertain. The team is expected to rely on a closer-by-committee approach, with Robert Garcia likely serving as the primary option. Megill has been outstanding over the past two seasons, posting a strong 2.60 ERA while recording 51 saves. In 2025 alone, he went 6-3 with a 2.49 ERA, 60 strikeouts, a 1.128 WHIP, and 30 saves across 50 appearances. His performance earned him his first All-Star selection, further establishing his reputation as an elite reliever.
One reason this trade is considered realistic is the Brewers’ history of managing their bullpen assets strategically. Milwaukee has consistently developed top-tier closers and then traded them before they reach free agency, ensuring the team gets value in return rather than losing players without compensation. This approach has previously been applied to pitchers like Josh Hader and Devin Williams, and Megill could be the next in line.
From a financial standpoint, Megill is set to earn approximately $4.7 million this season and still has another year of arbitration eligibility remaining. This gives the acquiring team at least two years of control, making him an attractive option for a club looking to contend in the short term.
