The Texas Rangers have made another adjustment to their pitching staff following an injury setback to one of their key arms. Right-handed pitcher Carter Baumler has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a right intercostal strain, prompting the team to bring in reinforcements from the minor leagues.
Baumler’s injury comes shortly after what had been his most impressive outing of the season. In Saturday’s game against Cincinnati, he delivered a flawless performance, retiring all batters he faced in a perfect inning while recording one strikeout. Despite the strong showing, it appears the injury occurred during that appearance, ultimately forcing him out of action. As a result, Baumler is expected to miss at least a couple of weeks while he recovers.
In response to this development, the Rangers have recalled reliever Luis Curvelo from Triple-A Round Rock to fill the vacant spot in the bullpen. The move was officially made on Sunday, the same day Baumler was placed on the injured list. Curvelo now has another opportunity to prove himself at the major league level after previously falling short of securing a spot on the Opening Day roster.
Although Curvelo did not make the team out of spring training, his return to the big leagues offers him a fresh chance to contribute. During his first stint in the majors last season, the right-hander appeared in 17 games, pitching a total of 19 innings. His performance resulted in a 5.68 earned run average (ERA) and a 1.42 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched). He also recorded 20 strikeouts while issuing 10 walks and managed to earn two holds during that stretch.
While those numbers suggest inconsistency, they also indicate some potential, particularly in his ability to generate strikeouts. However, given his past performance and the current makeup of the Rangers’ bullpen, Curvelo is not expected to take on a high-pressure role immediately. Instead, he will likely be utilized in lower-leverage situations as he works to establish himself and gain the trust of the coaching staff.
For the Rangers, this roster move reflects the ongoing challenge of maintaining pitching depth throughout a long season. Injuries are an inevitable part of baseball, and teams must be prepared to adapt quickly. By calling up Curvelo, Texas is relying on its organizational depth to bridge the gap left by Baumler’s absence.
As Baumler begins his recovery process, the team will hope for a smooth and timely return. In the meantime, Curvelo’s performance could play a key role in stabilizing the bullpen and providing valuable innings when needed.
