Cardinals Rising Star Could Be Next in Line for a Major Contract Extension
The St. Louis Cardinals appear to be in a strong position as they continue navigating their rebuilding phase, and one of their emerging young infielders may soon become a key part of the franchise’s long-term plans. While rebuilds often come with uncertainty and risk, the Cardinals have managed to avoid early missteps and instead have laid a solid foundation for future success.
A big reason for this optimism is the organization’s impressive pool of young talent. At the major league level, the Cardinals already feature a promising core of players who are beginning to make an impact. Beyond that, the team has several prospects who are on the verge of breaking into the big leagues, along with even younger players in the pipeline who could shape the roster in the coming years. The farm system is not only deep but also loaded with high-end talent at the top.
Among those prospects, infielder JJ Wetherholt has quickly emerged as one of the most exciting young players in the organization. His early performance has drawn significant attention and sparked discussions about whether he could soon join the growing list of young stars signing long-term contract extensions early in their careers.
According to CBS Sports analyst Mike Axisa, Wetherholt is one of the top candidates across baseball to secure such a deal. After earning a spot on the Cardinals’ Opening Day roster, he has wasted no time proving that he belongs. In his first stretch of games, Wetherholt has consistently reached base, doing so in 10 of his first 11 appearances. He has also delivered in clutch moments, including hitting a walk-off home run that showcased both his composure and talent.
Statistically, his performance has been equally impressive. His on-base percentage of .380 ranks among the best for qualified rookies, highlighting his ability to get on base and contribute offensively. Defensively, Wetherholt has also exceeded expectations. Although he is naturally a shortstop, he has been playing second base to accommodate Gold Glove winner Masyn Winn. Even in this adjusted role, Wetherholt has demonstrated excellent defensive skills, positioning himself as one of the more reliable young infielders in the league.
The current trend across Major League Baseball has seen several top prospects sign lucrative extensions early in their careers. Players like Cooper Pratt, Konnor Griffin, and Kevin McGonigle have all recently secured long-term deals with their respective teams. Given Wetherholt’s production and potential, it would not be surprising to see him follow a similar path.
Widely regarded as a five-tool player, Wetherholt offers a complete skill set that includes hitting for average, power, speed, defense, and overall baseball IQ. His strong all-around performance has reinforced the belief that he could develop into a cornerstone player for the Cardinals.
From a team perspective, offering Wetherholt a long-term extension—potentially in the range of eight or nine years—could be a smart investment. Such a deal would allow the Cardinals to secure his services through his prime years while potentially buying out some of his future free agency seasons at a reasonable cost. If structured similarly to recent contracts in the $140–$150 million range, it could provide both financial stability for the player and long-term value for the organization.
As Wetherholt continues to impress, the possibility of a major extension seems increasingly realistic, signaling another positive step forward in the Cardinals’ rebuilding process.
