The Philadelphia Phillies made another roster move Thursday by claiming right-handed pitcher Grant Holman off waivers from the Detroit Tigers. Following the claim, the Phillies immediately optioned Holman to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he will continue developing within the organization.

The move marks another stop in what has been a whirlwind stretch for Holman over the past few months. In just three months, the pitcher has already been part of five different organizations, highlighting both the uncertainty and opportunity that can come with life on the edge of major league rosters. Before arriving in Philadelphia, Holman spent time with the Oakland Athletics, Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Tigers.
Despite the constant movement, the Phillies clearly saw enough potential in Holman to add him to their 40-man roster. Returning to a major league roster spot is an important development for the pitcher, even though he will begin his tenure in the organization at the Triple-A level.
Holman most recently pitched in the Tigers’ minor league system, appearing for Detroit’s Triple-A affiliate before being designated for assignment. During his short time there, he struggled to produce consistent results, allowing three earned runs across four innings of work. While those numbers were not particularly dominant, Philadelphia appears willing to give the right-hander another opportunity to prove himself.
The frequent roster changes suggest that multiple organizations still believe Holman possesses intriguing talent or upside worth evaluating further. Players in similar situations are often valued because of their arm strength, pitch mix, or remaining developmental potential, even if they have yet to establish themselves consistently at the highest professional levels.
For the Phillies, adding pitching depth is never a bad move, especially during the long grind of a major league season. Organizations frequently cycle through relievers and depth arms due to injuries, workload concerns, and performance fluctuations. By claiming Holman, Philadelphia adds another possible bullpen option who can continue working in Triple-A while remaining available if the big league club needs reinforcements later in the season.
Holman’s immediate assignment to Triple-A Lehigh Valley will give the Phillies’ coaching staff an opportunity to evaluate him more closely and possibly refine aspects of his game. The organization may look to improve his command, consistency, or overall effectiveness before considering a call-up to the major leagues.
Although his recent journey through several organizations has been unusual, Holman now gets another fresh opportunity with a contender known for aggressively managing roster depth. If he performs well in the minors, he could eventually position himself for a chance to contribute in Philadelphia later in the year.
For now, the Phillies appear focused on seeing whether a change of scenery and a more stable developmental environment can help Holman tap into the potential that has continued to attract interest from teams around Major League Baseball.
