ESPN REPORT: Auburn Tigers lands new 5-Star QB To Bolster Squad Depth

Auburn Tigers football continued adding talent to its future roster on Saturday by securing a commitment from quarterback Gary Chatman, a prospect who had previously been committed to Wake Forest Demon Deacons football. The decision gives Auburn another important piece in its growing 2027 recruiting class as the program continues reshaping its offense for the future.

Chatman, a 6-foot-1 dual-threat quarterback from Brookwood High School in Snellville, Georgia, reopened his recruitment during the first week of May before quickly becoming a priority target for Auburn’s coaching staff. Shortly after backing away from Wake Forest, the Tigers intensified their pursuit and eventually convinced him to join the program.

The commitment was first reported by recruiting insider Hayes Fawcett of On3 and Rivals. Auburn’s coaching staff, led by head coach Alex Golesh, had been working aggressively to build a strong relationship with the young quarterback over the past several weeks.

According to recruiting analyst Chad Simmons, Auburn’s interest in Chatman began gaining momentum in late March. The Tigers brought him to campus for a visit on April 16 before officially extending a scholarship offer less than a week later on April 22. Chatman returned to Auburn again on May 1, and that second trip ultimately convinced him that the Tigers were the right fit for his future.

Speaking about his recruitment, Chatman explained that his comfort level with the coaching staff and the atmosphere around the program played a major role in his commitment.

He said that during his second visit to campus, he felt strongly connected to the environment and appreciated the energy surrounding the team. According to Chatman, the relationships he built with the coaches and the overall feeling around the program helped him realize Auburn was where he wanted to continue his football career.

One of the most important connections he formed was with quarterbacks coach Joel Gordon. Gordon has developed a reputation for working well with quarterbacks after helping guide Byrum Brown during his time at South Florida Bulls football. Gordon also briefly worked with NFL quarterback Brock Purdy earlier in his coaching career.

That experience and quarterback development history helped Auburn stand out during Chatman’s recruitment. The young passer reportedly felt comfortable with Gordon’s coaching style and vision for his future within the offense.

Although Chatman is currently rated as a three-star prospect, recruiting services view him as one of the better quarterbacks nationally in the 2027 class. He is ranked as the No. 69 quarterback prospect in the country and is considered a player with significant long-term potential.

On the field, Chatman offers a versatile skill set that appears well suited for Golesh’s offensive system. He is known for his ability to make accurate deep throws with strong touch and timing, allowing his receivers opportunities to make plays downfield. His passing mechanics and ability to throw with arc have become strengths in his development.

However, his athleticism may be what makes him especially intriguing for Auburn’s offense. Chatman is a dangerous runner who can create plays outside the pocket and thrive in spread concepts. His mobility and quickness make him a natural fit for Golesh’s veer-and-shoot attack, an offense designed to stretch defenses both through the air and on the ground.

Chatman also joins an improving Auburn recruiting class that recently added four-star wide receiver Brylan Oduor. The possibility of the two developing chemistry together in the future gives Auburn fans even more reason for optimism as the Tigers continue building toward the future.
