The St. Louis Cardinals have been one of the more unexpected success stories in baseball this season. Entering the year with relatively modest expectations and widely viewed as a team in transition, St. Louis has instead put together a strong campaign. With a 25–18 record and sitting in the second National League Wild Card position, the Cardinals have quickly shifted from rebuilding discussions to legitimate playoff contenders. Their early-season performance has been widely seen as a clear success.
Because of their strong start, attention has begun to turn toward what the Cardinals might do next, especially as the MLB trade deadline approaches. Even though the organization was not initially expected to be aggressive buyers, their current position in the standings has raised the possibility that management could consider adding impact talent. If they choose to reinforce the roster, the focus would likely be on players who could help not only in the short term but also in future seasons.
One name that has recently surfaced in trade speculation is Minnesota Twins pitcher Joe Ryan. In a FanSided column, Chris Landers identified several potential “dark horse” landing spots for top trade candidates, and he included the Cardinals as a realistic fit for Ryan.
Landers pointed out that St. Louis may already deserve more respect as a contender, given how competitive the National League Wild Card race appears to be. Even if the Cardinals are unable to overtake the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central, their current position suggests they have a strong chance to remain in postseason contention. That makes them a logical team to consider adding a frontline starting pitcher. Ryan, in particular, stands out as a strong match due to both his skill set and the conditions of his pitching style.
Ryan is known for being a fly-ball pitcher, and that trait could play well at Busch Stadium, which is generally considered favorable for pitchers who can limit damage in the air. Additionally, he has shown the ability to miss bats and maintain solid run prevention, making him the type of arm that could immediately strengthen a postseason rotation.
From a roster-building standpoint, Ryan is also appealing because he is not just a short-term rental. He remains under team control beyond the current season, which would allow any acquiring team like St. Louis to potentially benefit from his services for multiple years. That added control significantly increases his trade value and makes him more attractive to teams trying to balance present success with future stability.
So far in the 2026 season, Ryan has continued to perform at a high level. Through nine appearances, he has posted a 3.43 ERA, maintaining consistency on the mound. His performance is not an outlier either, as he was equally effective in the previous season, finishing with a 13–10 record and a 3.42 ERA across 31 outings while earning an All-Star selection. Those numbers reflect a pitcher who has established himself as a reliable mid-rotation or better starter.
For the Cardinals, the idea of pursuing a pitcher like Ryan highlights how quickly their season outlook has changed. What began as a potential rebuild has turned into a possible playoff push, and that shift could influence their approach at the deadline. If they remain in contention, St. Louis could become one of the more interesting teams to watch in trade discussions, with Joe Ryan emerging as a realistic and impactful target.
