Former St. Louis Cardinals utility player José Martínez has expressed a strong desire to return to the organization, this time in a coaching capacity, signaling that his connection with the franchise is still very much alive.
Martínez, who became a fan favorite during his time in St. Louis, spent the first four seasons of his Major League career with the Cardinals. During that stretch, he appeared in 398 games and posted an impressive offensive line of .298/.363/.458 with an .821 OPS. He also contributed 41 home runs, 172 RBIs, 118 walks, 57 doubles, three triples, and 160 runs scored, establishing himself as a consistent and reliable bat in the lineup.
After leaving St. Louis, Martínez’s time in the majors came to an end in 2020 when he played briefly for both the Tampa Bay Rays and the Chicago Cubs. He appeared in 34 games that season but did not return to Major League Baseball afterward, eventually stepping away from playing professionally.
Now retired from playing, Martínez recently appeared on “Cardinals Territory,” where he openly discussed his interest in returning to the Cardinals in a coaching role. He explained that he feels a responsibility to pass along the knowledge he gained from playing alongside some of the franchise’s most respected figures, including Yadier Molina and Adam Wainwright. According to Martínez, those veteran leaders helped shape his understanding of the game, and he believes sharing that experience with younger players is something he is meant to do.
He also mentioned that he is already gaining some experience in coaching, particularly in hitting instruction. Martínez noted that he has been working with younger players and feels comfortable in that environment, suggesting that developing talent and helping players improve could be a natural next step in his baseball journey.
Martínez’s baseball path has been anything but straightforward. He originally began his professional career in 2006 when he signed with the Chicago White Sox as an amateur free agent. Over the years, he spent time in multiple organizations, including the Atlanta Braves and Kansas City Royals, and also played independent baseball with the Rockford Aviators. Eventually, he made his way to the Cardinals organization, where he finally broke through to the Major Leagues.
In addition to his MLB experience, Martínez also played internationally in the Mexican League with teams such as Acereros de Monclova and Leones de Yucatán before retiring from playing. His long journey through different levels of professional baseball gave him a wide range of experiences, from struggling in the minors to succeeding in the majors.
That background is part of what makes him an appealing candidate for a coaching role. He understands the challenges of climbing through the minor leagues and the dedication required to reach the highest level. While star players often receive most of the attention, Martínez’s career reflects the reality of many professional baseball players who must work tirelessly for years to earn and maintain a spot in the big leagues.
Given his experience, leadership qualities, and familiarity with the Cardinals organization, a potential coaching role for Martínez could be a valuable addition for the franchise. His desire to return suggests a strong bond with the team and a willingness to contribute in a new capacity.
