Seattle Mariners have officially welcomed back right-handed pitcher after activating him from the injured list on Wednesday. In a corresponding roster move, the club sent left-handed pitcher Robinson Ortiz back to Triple-A Tacoma as the Mariners continued to adjust their bullpen heading deeper into the season.
Brash, who is 28 years old, had been sidelined since May 1 because of inflammation in his right lat muscle. The injury forced the hard-throwing reliever to miss a stretch of games, but the Mariners are now getting back one of the most effective arms in their bullpen. Before going on the injured list, Brash had been dominant in relief appearances this season and quickly became one of the team’s most dependable late-inning options.

In 14 outings during the current campaign, Brash has posted a perfect 2-0 record while maintaining an impressive 0.00 ERA. Opposing hitters have struggled to generate offense against him, and his return is expected to strengthen Seattle’s bullpen significantly. The Mariners have also enjoyed tremendous team success whenever Brash takes the mound, compiling a 12-2 record in games in which he has appeared this year.
Since arriving in the major leagues, Brash has steadily developed into an important piece of Seattle’s pitching staff. He made his MLB debut with the Mariners in 2022 and has appeared in a total of 184 games, including five starts. Over that span, he has accumulated a 16-11 record with a strong 3.10 ERA while also recording eight saves. Known for his electric stuff and ability to miss bats, Brash has become one of the more valuable relief pitchers in the organization.
His road back to the mound has not been easy. Brash missed the entire 2024 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, a major procedure that often requires lengthy rehabilitation for pitchers. The Mariners remained patient throughout his recovery process, and his excellent performance this season has shown that he has returned healthy and capable of making a major impact once again.
Seattle’s decision to activate Brash reflects both confidence in his health and the team’s desire to reinforce its bullpen as the season progresses. The Mariners have leaned heavily on strong pitching performances throughout the year, and Brash’s presence adds another reliable option in high-pressure situations. His ability to dominate opposing lineups in short outings gives the coaching staff more flexibility late in games.
To make room on the active roster, the Mariners optioned Robinson Ortiz to Triple-A Tacoma. The 26-year-old left-hander had only recently been called up from the minors on Monday, but he did not get an opportunity to make his Major League Baseball debut during his brief stay with the big-league club.
Although Ortiz has not yet appeared in an MLB game, he has delivered solid results in Triple-A this season. In 15 relief appearances with Tacoma, he owns a 2.81 ERA along with an 0-1 record. The Mariners still appear to value his potential, and he could receive another opportunity later in the season if bullpen needs arise.
For now, Seattle is focused on maximizing its pitching depth, and the return of Matt Brash provides a significant boost as the Mariners continue their push through the season.
