In a landmark contribution to Texas Tech University, former Red Raiders basketball coach Bob Knight has donated $3.5 million to support the renovation of the United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas. This generous gift is part of the university’s ongoing efforts to enhance its athletic facilities through the Campaign for Fearless Champions.
The United Supermarkets Arena, a 15,300-seat multipurpose facility that opened in 1999, serves as the home for Texas Tech’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as the women’s volleyball team. The arena has undergone several upgrades over the years, including a $9.45 million contribution from United Supermarkets in 2014 for renovations and naming rights.
Coach Knight’s donation will specifically fund the modernization of training and locker room facilities, aiming to provide state-of-the-art amenities for current and future student-athletes. This initiative aligns with previous projects under the Campaign for Fearless Champions, such as the construction of the Dustin R. Womble Basketball Practice Facility, which was supported by a $10 million gift from the Womble family.
Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt expressed gratitude for Coach Knight’s continued support, stating, “Coach Knight’s commitment to excellence has left a lasting impact on Texas Tech basketball. This generous contribution will further enhance our facilities, ensuring our student-athletes have the resources they need to succeed.”
The renovation project is set to commence later this year, with completion anticipated by the start of the next basketball season. The upgraded facilities are expected to bolster recruitment efforts and provide an enhanced experience for athletes and fans alik
