Mariners Add Veteran Depth After Acquiring Kennedy From Giants
The Seattle Mariners have strengthened their roster by bringing in another experienced player from a divisional rival. The team completed a trade with the San Francisco Giants on Sunday, acquiring utility player Kennedy in exchange for cash considerations.
The move came shortly after the Giants removed Kennedy from their 40-man roster by designating him for assignment earlier that same day. However, San Francisco did not have to wait long to find a new destination for the 27-year-old, as Seattle quickly showed interest and finalized the deal.
Kennedy’s time with the Giants’ major league team was limited. During his four-week stint in San Francisco, he appeared in only seven games, recording seven at-bats. His offensive numbers during that period were modest, as he went hitless in seven at-bats, drawing one walk while striking out three times. Despite his limited production at the plate, the Mariners view him as a valuable depth option who can provide flexibility across multiple positions.
One factor that made the trade more complicated is that Kennedy has already used all of his minor-league option years. Because of this, Seattle cannot simply send him back to the minors without exposing him to additional roster moves. The Mariners will now need to create a place for him on their 26-man active roster.
The addition of Kennedy gives Seattle more versatility, particularly because of his ability to play both infield and outfield positions. Rather than relying on him as an everyday starter, the Mariners are expected to use him primarily as a reliable backup who can step in when needed. His defensive flexibility could prove valuable throughout the long MLB season, especially when injuries or scheduling challenges affect the team’s regular lineup.
Kennedy could also receive opportunities to start occasionally, especially in matchups against left-handed pitchers. His ability to handle multiple positions allows the Mariners to make lineup adjustments while maintaining defensive stability.
For Seattle, the acquisition represents a low-risk move that adds experience and roster depth. The Mariners have continued to look for ways to strengthen their squad by adding players who can contribute in different situations, and Kennedy fits that profile. Although his recent offensive numbers have been limited, his versatility and major league experience make him a useful addition.
The Giants, meanwhile, were able to move on from a player they had designated for assignment while receiving financial compensation in return. The quick trade allowed both teams to address their respective roster needs.
As the season progresses, Kennedy will have the opportunity to earn a larger role with Seattle. If he can provide dependable defense, quality at-bats against left-handed pitching, and valuable flexibility, he could become an important piece of the Mariners’ roster strategy. For now, the team sees him as a capable veteran presence who can help provide stability during the challenges of a demanding MLB schedule.
