Breaking News: Just In Guardians Make Big Announcement About Fans Favorite Experience Star

In a move that has caught the attention of fans and insiders alike, the Cleveland Guardians have made a major announcement regarding veteran catcher Austin Hedges. The club confirmed Tuesday afternoon that Hedges will be transitioning into a dual role with the organization, splitting duties between backup catcher and special assistant to the player development staff for the remainder of the 2025 season.

Hedges, who rejoined the Guardians earlier this year after a brief stint with the Pittsburgh Pirates and a stop with the Texas Rangers, has long been regarded as one of the best defensive catchers in the game. While his offensive output has never been his calling card  he’s a career .188 hitter  his value behind the plate, both as a game caller and mentor, has been well documented.

“Austin brings leadership, insight, and a fierce competitiveness to everything he does,” Guardians President of Baseball Operations Chris Antonetti said in the official release. “As our roster continues to grow younger, having someone like Hedges involved in both an on-field and developmental capacity is incredibly valuable.”

Hedges has embraced the hybrid role, which is believed to be the first of its kind in the franchise’s recent history. He will remain on the 26-man roster as the backup to starting catcher Bo Naylor, while also working directly with Cleveland’s minor league catchers and pitchers during off days and home stands. The Guardians are hopeful that Hedges’ wealth of experience will help accelerate the development of younger talent, particularly within a system loaded with high-upside arms.

In a clubhouse interview, Hedges said, “I’m honored that the Guardians trust me with this kind of responsibility. This team has a bright future, and I want to help shape it  not just by playing, but by sharing what I’ve learned over the years.”

With Cleveland in the thick of a tight AL Central race and postseason aspirations growing stronger, the Guardians hope Hedges’ leadership can provide both immediate and long-term benefits as they continue building a contender.
